I brought my son Fifa 11 and was quite surprised to see that we had to pay about £6.00 if he wanted to play others online? Why is this? Fifa 10 didnt charge to play online..

also ordered him Call Or Duty - Black Ops - does anything reckon this is gonna be the best yet?

I was under the impression that online multiplayer was free? Or are the developers now trying to whack some more money from the customer piñata?

I hope this is a FIFA 11 only thing, or are more developers doing this to try to torpedo the second hand market?

Its with every EA Sports MP game... others will follow. I think Ubisoft also do this. Face it, it'll soon become the norm... and before you know it, monthly subscriptions to play online games like fifa/madden and COD. :o

Got it in one - Id be surprised that by the time FIFA 13 is out this isnt the norm for any game that has a MP element added into the core game mode. Wouldnt be surprised if the next Bad Company didnt have it...

Who honestly cares? Most people buy Fifa/NHL/NFL on a yearly basis, and I'd like to bet that most people buy these games new. There's a lot of discount to be had on most games by simply pre-ordering nowadays, not to mention bonus content or DLC to sweeten the deal. Say for example 1st of October next year, Fifa 12 is out, somebody buys a second hand copy of Fifa 11 for £5, they then have to pay a further £6 to play it online, that's still only £11 for a less than year old game.
