Wasn't sure where best to post this, figured in here would be most suitable.

I had a swap around of my consoles the other day, setting up the PS4 in the playroom so that I can leave the VR set up. That left a hole in the lounge, so thought I'd fill it with my old PS3! My youngest has never seen it, so thought it would be fun to play through some old games with him - Joe Danger, Hamster Ball, LBP.

The PS3 still holds its own graphically, looking good on my 55" TV, and the library of games was (still is) amazing. Probably not a popular opinion, but it's my favourite console generation ever!

The PS3 / 360 / Wii Gen was brilliant, the jump to HD gaming (baring the Wii) was a game changer, last proper leap from generation to generation imo.

I remember when it was first released, Resistance Fall of Man looked like the best graphics i had ever seen at the time.

I tried to play it a few years back and it felt very dated but back in its day it was an amazing machine.

I picked up a PS3 in 2015 or so to sit alongside my 360. It stays hooked up in the office even if it is just for GT6 (which isn't as bad as people make out). We're still in the era of cheap games for this console generation so I try out random games on it like Turning Point, an incredibly boring FPS game I picked up the other day.

To be honest I prefer the 360. The controller is better and I actually prefer AA batteries. I can used a wired controller instead of finding a 3m micro-USB cable. Quite a few games perform better on 360 even if they look slightly worse. The interface is easier to use in 2023.

The nice thing with the PS3 is even though it's pretty old now, it still feels like a modern console in terms of networking, UI, connectivity etc.

I sold mine a little while ago and the person who bought it instantly broke it by being negligent, was so frustrating after looking after it for ~15 years to see someone trash it in 15 minutes.

How are you guys dealing with the jaggies / aliasing that show up when playing the PS3 on a 4k TV? Would be interested to see if anyone has found a solution (other than those upscaling adapters that you can buy)

I’ve been looking to get a PS3 Slim for a while now to go alongside my PS2. I’ve discounted the super slim on account of them feeling so cheap and lightweight, the full fat on the basis of them being a bit unreliable (plus that glossy plastic pls no). You’ve inspired me to get looking again.

The Super Slim does feel cheap but it's also less likely to break as it doesn't have the feed-style disc drive.

I think the PS3 sometimes holds up, other times not so much, mostly depending on the game. It was notoriously difficult to develop for , architecturally, so many games don't perform optimally. Fortunately there are still loads of great games. I struggle that not many are 60 fps (like PS2) and the rendering techniques and styles of that generation sometimes have not aged well in terms of colour balance and clarity. That said, the 1080p output on my 4k screen generally still looks fantastic.

I also own a super slim and I think it's OK. It has the latest hardware and chip revisions so is efficient and cool running but the build is a bit cheap and from what I recall it can't run 'proper' custom firmware, but some hybrid instead. That said, I didn't have any issues getting home-brew to work of any kind. It's an OK choice if you don't need/want PS2 compatibility, and to be honest, about 10 years into my ownership, these are going to be the second hand models with generally the least hours/play time and that does count for something. I don't think the super slim is invulnerable to disc drive issues, although mostly due to the cheap-ish lid. As long as you're not rough with it, should be fine. Kids etc. don't always get that.

Yeah, some of the last of the Slim models are considered the most desirable. They have various fixes over the early slims, perhaps a little less play time, and can take 'proper' custom firmware. One of those with a 1tb HDD in are still a lot of fun today.

Anyone know what the maximum size hard drive you can put into a 1st fat (PS2 backward compatible) model, want to put CFW on and load it with as many games as possible so I don't need to have a PS1 and PS2 out as well.

You could use component - RetroTINK 5X and use the smoothing option. There is a HDMI adapter called the mClassic but the jury is out on that one.

You can technically go to 1.5TB with an SSD, however once you go over 1TB the PS3 basically loses the ability to run its file system repair utilities, and it's essentially inevitable that over time the file system will reach a state that the PS3 deems "corrupted" (even if it actually isn't) and it will no longer boot without a format.

So stick to 1TB or below.

Cheers, will get a 1TB sorted.

Anyone know if I CFW a PS2 backwards compatible PS3 will it still be using the hardware to emulate the games, or will it swap to purely software based emulation, because if it does; I have an older fat model which doesn't have PS3 BC on it, that I could just mod instead.

IIRC I had to enable the software emulation mode on my 40gb non backward compatible phat.
So by default on a phat with CFW that mode should be disabled, as there was a guide to enabling it. I'm 90% sure I'm remembering that right!

I have a phat 40gb and a slim. Personally could never use the phat ps3/4's again with the jet engine factor, despite repaste/cleaning it out, and even going so far as setting a custom fan curve, the slim's are silent on both my ps3/4 slim's :)

I still use them every now and again :)

Both have ssd's in :)

I just keep the phat ps3 for nostalgia.
