I've got an older PS3 model (the fat ones with 80gb hdd) and out of the blue recently it stopped reading games. Currently, it will not read any games I put in, but it will play CD's/DVD's on occasion, which is leaving me stumped.

I've gone through a couple of guides I've found online, mainly to do with restoring the system and some other nonsense, but nothing has worked thus far.

My hunch says this is an issue with the hardware, but I had hoped that someone here could provide some advice.

Will it be easier to just get a new bluray unit for it, or is there a chance that taking it to pieces and cleaning the laser will help?

From past experience I've had to replace the laser in the drive, restoring the file system and taking it apart to clean had no effect.

You should be able to pick up a new lens for around £20, easy enough to fit just make sure you get the correct model number as there are a few different ones depending on your ps3 model number.

Cool will look into that, thanks!

Just for reference, I bought a replacement KES-410A + deck and swapped it with the one in my PS3.

Worked first time, and now I can read all types of disks again!
