Hi there.

I was just thinking of picking up a Playstation Eye today.

What I really want, is a webcam for the PC, to keep in contact with mates abroad. But I believe the Playstation Eye works on the PC now, so I may as well get that, and I'll have a camera for the PS3, if I ever want to use it.

Does the chat function from the XMB support video? I'm assuming it does.

So anyway, my question was, before I make the purchase, I was wondering if anybody in here uses the Playstation Eye on their PCs, and if so, how well it works, and what driver you used? (and where did you get it from, links please?)

I'm on Vista 64bit.

Would be great if I could use it on my PC, as well as the PS3, so I could chat to my mates, and also use it for LBP, or in Burnout Paradise, or in Home even?

Thanks for any tips from people who've got it working,

With thanks,
Vin.

Ain't heard nothing about PC drivers (tbh I have not looked for ages).

Where did you get/read about them. If they are available I would test it (got XP, OS X and Vista handy, I think).

I just googled.

I remembered reading about it a while ago, but can't remember where.
So I just did a google, lots of pages about it, some old, that say it can't be done, some new that seemed to hint it can... so rather than scan through it all, just thought I'd ask in here if anybody's done it.

Vin.

EDIT: Or maybe this helps?

As mentioned in the boardsus.playstation.com link above, the latest version of the drivers can be found here

That link sounds quite promising.
Nice and easy to follow, and a different driver set I think, to the one I was looking at.

So rp2000, or anybody else who fancies giving it a go, feel free to let us know? If it works, just well enough to do some online chatting and maybe some basic vga video capturing, that would be good enough.

Best price these days too?
I nearly bought one today at £17.99, but if they're cheaper elsewhere, feel free to let me know ;p

Thanks,
Vin.

I read this page and it is for Eyetoy (ps2 version). Even went to their forums and they say doesn't work on PS3 version.

The links V1N provided are for PS3 camera. 2 different drivers (I think). I will do some reading later and maybe try them.

Thanks mate.

It's the same driver I think. Different pages, but discussing the same project. There were two different packs to install, but the latest versions have it all down to one install, which at the moment, the latest version is on that alexpopovich site.

here

PS3EyeSetup (v2.0b81021)
Code:
http://www.codelaboratories.com/files/PS3EyeSetup.2.0b81021.exe

Notes (v2.0b81021): Driver installation tested on both Vista x86 and x64 it now works properly and driver files are found correctly. As of this version (v2.0b81021) the PS3EyeLib driver uses the advanced thread scheduling features only available in Vista. This greatly improves its performance and stability on this OS.

just tried the driver V1n posted, it works fine on XP 32bit. Doesn't make the camera normal webcam in my computer though. I'm not sure how it will react with 3rd party apps, it didn't pick it up in windows movie maker. But in the app that comes with the driver it performed great.

I didn't read the pages properly, rather skim through, but I did see on at least one of those links I posted, something about a Directshow driver? Or directshow files at least? If these were installed correctly, wouldn't any app be able to pick it up?

lol, yep, just clicked the link and right at the very top....

So it is MEANT to work with other Windows apps.
I take it that it was AmCap you ran?
This is just a normal Windows app, isn't it?
I'm sure I remember using that with an old Hauppage WinTV PCI card many years ago, and again to test a Mustek cheapass digital camera with basic capture capability once.

That being the case, then AmCap is just using Directshow, and IS just a normal windows app, so hopefully other apps can access it too... like MSN for video chat, for example?

Vin.

EDIT: Sounds like it's early days anyway. Was just reading some of the comments, and people are having difficulties... so this is obviously just at the alpha or beta stage at best. So, not that reliable yet, but, I'd hope in the coming months that this would improve. It seems to have come along leaps and bounds from the original attempts at least :) I may still consider buying one, and hope that next year I can use it easily as a PC webcam.

Same results for me on XP 32bit. Movie Maker and MSN don't work. The built in app gives you an idea. You can capture 640*480 at 30/60/75fps. Don't know much about webcams, but that sounds quite high to me. Quality in the preview window is pretty good although I have no real frame of reference.

Just a heads up on this if anyone is still interested in using their Playstation Eye as a PC webcam.

I tried this ages ago and the drivers didn't work right and it caused random crashes but these ones seem to work fine in Windows 7 x64.

PSEye Drivers

They were last updated in October this year so seems to be an ongoing project.

Apologies if this has been posted recently. :)
