Hi all,

I recently got my ps3 and although i am currently disappointed with the gfx and performance compared to xbox i am stll looking forward to trying it multiplayer.

This was a house warming present of sorts for me as just moved into new flat a week ago and still waiting on phoneline being installed so no internet at the mo, kinda what prompted the buy, no net or sky = boredom.

Could anyone tell me what the psn is like to play on? I heard that devs have to run servers for u to play on so hard to get games going etc and bad performance. Also what are *** chances of devs paying to run servers for long? Any plans for sony to incorporate a similar system to wii and xbox for the multiplayer down the line we are aware of?

Thanks in advance

ps. i know my 2 threads both seem like ps3 bashing threads, tahts not the intention i guess i am just looking for reassurance that i didnt buy a shiny black doorstop :o

In terms of actual online play (if you exclude the matchmaking friends list element) it is just as good if not better than the 60 in a lot of games (due to having dedicated servers).

As yet I have not experienced lag in any of the online PS3 games I have played.

Do you have any specific games you are referring to?

The ones you mentioned that you own, (Motorstorm, RFOM, FN3 and Ninja Gaiden) I have not had any issues with at all, online. (Ninja Gaiden is the only one with no online play, just high score boards).

Don't worry were used to PS3 bashing threads :), as were currently the minority it's to be expected.

As for online it's really the same as the console in general it's a work in progress. You have the benefit of 40 player dedicated servers virtually lag free gaming (Resistance) yet no access to friends whilst in game. Home will hopefully address this when it arrives in October?

The way I look at it is if you want great gfx, games & a pretty good online service now then the 360 will give you it, but if you can wait until next year the PS3 will offer the same but perhaps better in certain areas (i.e. dedicated servers) + it's free atm :)

Although only time will tell..

Thanks guys sounds good. Just with EA shutting down mulitudes of servers like they are prone to do recently it just made me wonder how long servers for non EA games would run.

Not too fussed about friends list at the moment as only one of my mates has a ps3 so wont worry about that for now. Thanks again.

Just bought a PS3 the past friday, picked it up with 5 games and picked up The Darkness seperately too. The games I got with it were Resistance, F1, Motorstorm, Ridge Racer 7 and Call of Duty 3. Having a heap of fun with it thus far, the graphics are fine I think, even on the sub-par 360 ports. The lack of AA in the darkness is mildly annoying, but that's about it, it's still fun to play and still looks pretty good despite the jaggies.

Enjoy your purchase mate, don't get bogged down wondering if the grass is greener in the land of 360, because fact is right now it probably is. If the 360 was released at the same time as the PS3 however, I think you'd find the split between people's opinions to be 50/50. There's heaps up and coming for both consoles, pick up whatever you like the look of and just enjoy it. :)

Btw, my PSN name is Jarakin for any who want to add me to friends - not tried online games yet extensively, but shall in the future!

Also i gather no1 can add you to friends yet on PSN but is hopefully a feature to be incorporated in near future.

?

You can add friends and see what they're playing, but you can't communicate with them if one of you are in game. If your both playing a game together you can chat, just not invite..

As I said hopefully Home will address this issue.

Shut up, minority person! *thwack*
I demand the Sony people get their votes discounted as well.
(nb. stop being such a martyr)

Anyways. I think you'll find the PSN actually has dedicated servers for the majority of its games, something that Live does not provide despite forcing you to pay. I would also say that there appears to be less lag as well, but I can only say that from the few times I've gone online with Resistance and Motorstorm. On the other hand, the console comes with no form of communication input, so most online matches are deadly silent. This might be a plus point for you if you feel that racism and such is skyhigh on other services such as Live or PC gaming, etc.

Edz is right. The friends network is fully up and running, it's just severely gimped right now, but with Home in the not too distant future the possibilities are (hopefully) endless.

Home could be the key element in swinging Sony's PSN online service ahead of Microsofts Live. Bar the friends and Xbox Live Arcade Sony are already ahead imo.

Warhawk is going to be a combination of peer to peer and dedicated servers. They are making it so that you can play global games so I suppose the P2P eliment will enable you to hold clan matches etc.
