Hi,

I'm working on a creative brief to design an advertising campaign for the Playstation 3.

I wanted to get an idea of what other people felt the personality of the Playstation brand is, in comparison to the other major consoles (XBox 360 7 Nintendo Wii).

At the moment I am thinking that the XBox is more serious, perhaps slightly more technical due to its close relationship to Microsoft and PC Gamers as a whole. The Playstation represents, for me, a more dark side to gaming. The look and feel of the console (the jet black colour of the casing for PS2 & PS3) as well as pioneering games such as GTA and Resident Evil, and other titles in these sort of genres.

I'd be interested in hearing everyone's ideas on this subject and it would help me no end!

Thanks

You cant use RE and GTA really. They are coming out on the 360, and frankly I am not sure that it is a "darker" console (the PS3)

Try to focus instead on games like Gran Turismo and Metal Gear Solid... I never think marketing on the strength of games that consoles share is worth it, you need to make a stronger case with the games the other consoles wont ever get a look in.

Are we taking into acount the companys recent actions, or simply basing our views on the console and its expected capabilites.

I think there is a greate Wii vs PS3 advert on youtube that may give you a good starting point.

I think the PS3 is made by a Nazis. Flaming blubber chuckers closing down many a persons fav store Lik-Sang. I shouted from the roof tops Sony will damage the gaming industry and everyone tought I was just another fanboy.

"You'll all see, you'll see I tell ya"

my contribution...honestly

the playstation to me, seems to have very little personality, run by a company that doesnt seem to care, i know this seems very fanboyish, but i didnt think the ps1 had a personality so to speak

niether did the xbox, but the 360 does :)

If the PlayStation was an 80's person, it would be a MOD. Thinks it's fashionable, thinks its hard but at the end of the day is no different to the others. Just has fancy clothing and a bit of an attitude.

IN other words, it's a chav ;)

I wouldn't say that the Playstation brand is any darker than Xbox. I agree that you shouldn't focus on things such as GTA and Resident Evil, as they are cross-platform.

In my opinion, Playstation is a brand which brings non-gamers into the gaming community. It has brought several innovations to surface, such as dance mats, buzz, and the singstar karaoke games. It has brought gaming to a level where age is no boundary - there are a lot of very basic puzzle games aimed at young children, standard racing and shooting games, and then back to the likes of Buzz. Really though, when I think of the PS2, I think of football/(manager) type games and the type who play only these are more likely to pick it over any other console.

If you compare the PS2 to the Xbox and Gamecube, there are a lot of matching titles, but the Xbox is much more of a gamers console and the Gamecube is childish and friendly. The PS2, however, has a bit of everything.

The Playstation is a popular indoor grill promoted by boxing legend Ken Kutaragi. It is often promoted in infomercials and is manufactured by Sony.

It features a clamshell design with top and bottom teflon-coated heating surfaces, and a slightly slanted grated bottom surface which allows giant crabs and other coagulants to sluice down and away from the primary grilling items. The floating hinge allows the grill to remain in close contact with both the top and bottom of bluray discs of various thicknesses. The Playstation is available in several different sizes and configurations. Since its introduction in 1995, over 55 million grills have been sold. Ken Kutaragi himself has made over $150 million from the sales of the playstations, more money than he made during his entire boxing career. He is hoping to spend it on ridge racer. The grill is said to "knock out japanese history".

In 2006 the Playstation "Next Grilleration" 3 was launched, aimed at the new generation of people wanting real time weapon switching.

EDIT: A quick google image search brings up this:

which I think sums it up nicely
:p

I'd say the GC was more of a gamers console, playing games to enjoy yourself and play with friends. The PS2 and XBox were very much single player oriented (XBL doesn't count as you're still being antisocial sitting on your own) and 'serious' with 'adult' games :).
would have to agree there i'm afraid nintendo are normally asscociated (sp) with the more 'hardcore' gamers

I totally agree with this. Nintendo seems to have cut itself out a niche as the fun, almost toy company, focusing on playing together (in the same room rather than online), innovative experiences, and easy of use, with very few dark/violent/adult games. They really seem to appeal to younger people be it kids visiting each others houses or 18-25 year olds living together is dorms/shared houses.

MS (particularly with the 360) really seem to be going after the more mature (age-wise) gamer, adults who can't play with their friends in the same room regularly so love the online features, or just want to enjoy a good single player experiences.

Sony just seem to want to (and have succeeded so far) cover everything, fun, innovative, party type games (guitar heroes, singstar, buzz, eye toy) all the way to serious gamers games (MGS, FF, GT etc.) They have done an excellent job of breaking new ground and brining gaming to people who haven’t gamed before.
