Hi guys, here's the deal... I'm looking to buy a new graphics card for my boyfriend, and I want to get him something awesome. I seem to have lost touch with what's good and what's not. CUDA Cores, core base and boost... I'll admit to being wtf?! Haha.

So, for around 600 what's the best option for someone who games regularly and does some light rendering and game dev in Unity?!

I was looking at a Titan or a 780Ti.

If you can enlighten me on what to look for that would be awesome.

Thanks

Natalie. :)

Hi,
Tough question, especially this week.

What resolution monitor is? (I assume at least 1080p)
How big the power supply?
What is the CPU of the computer?
What is his current card?

Knowing the above will help us to see what is better to get for the money.

It will be tad pointless to spend 600 quid on a card when the power supply will not be able to hold, or the card going to be bottlenecked by the CPU, or actually has a card of similar power and different brand (eg AMD).

With that kind of wonga to spend on a card, I'd be looking to buy a GTX 980 come this Friday.

You'll blow your boyfriends mind.

Hey Natalie, Friday nVidia will be releasing new cards and it could well pay to wait and see what they bring in terms of price and performance. If they fall short of the hype, you can always grab a 780Ti or even a Titan Black (as he does rendering).

Best just to wait :)

If I asked my g/f for a new graphics card she would give me a funny look and tell me not to waste money on silly things for you toy that would be better spent on new wardrobes.

Wait until Friday/Monday when Nvidia lunches their new cards, you can buy either a new 900 series or purchase 780/780Ti which will be reduced to clear inventories.

TBH you might be able to wow him by spreading the 600 over more than one item. It's a shame the 780Ti's aren't still at their rock-bottom prices (350-odd was it?).

Ahhh sorry dudes should have given more info, was in a hurry as I was at work. I built his machine for him last year, it's got an i7 3770k, 16GB RAM, 850 or 1000watt Corsair PSU (can't remember which) but it was deffo overkill, and his current GPU is a GTX 660.

He's got 3 x 24" monitors that run at full HD res, 2 on DVI and one on HDMI.

His gameplay varies but mostly FPS such as Battlefield and COD etc. :D

Thanks guys, I'll look into the new cards, I've got a bit of time to his birthday to save up. :D

Natalie, if he is running 3 24" monitors, given the current prices, and except he is not an NVIDIA fan, my advice is to get him 2 of these

Not a single upcoming card for at least 2 years can beat those two together, and at £564 both are completely steal.

But you can wait and be persuaded otherwise. Here to help anyway :)
