When my mate leaves his PC on for a while the screen has lines down it and it crashes so he needs to turn it off and it sounds like its still running.

What do you think could be the problem? He has an ATI card, PCIe. All drivers up to date. PC was running fine. Nothing installed lately to make the problem.

Could it be a faulty card, driver, monitor?
 
Sounds like an over heating gpu. Use rivatuner or the ccc to up the fan speed. If he does not mind noise then i have mine set to 50% all the time and it keeps it nice and cool. That happened on my 1900xtx but the memory on that was dying so there was no fix. Also if the pc has not had a clean out in a while make sure to do that as it may be causing the pc to be hot inside the case.
