Note: We are buying this for a system build so please no xp vs vista stuff :) Thanks :)

Question> Is Premium basically the same as ultimate just without the extra's that are meant to be downloadable. Will my friend be missing anything crucial if he gets Premium 64, instead of Ultimate 64?

Note: System used for game playing mainly.

if it's a gaming only rig, either use home basic 64, or business 64 (business has remote desktop if you want that)

I find a mojority of people end up using media center and Media Portal just isn't as good as the MS one.

No I mean what's the point of a HTPC front end even installed in a gaming rig?
Oh and MP is better than MS, MS is for noobs but MP is far more powerful

personally i'd never use media centre when sat at a pc, media centre is just a front end for a remote imo

much faster to use a mouse & explorer to load videos / music

might as well save the hard drive space for games

Home premium is the way forward, most users never use the few extras ultimate has in comparison (and those who do know they need it), basic is just what is says, basic, it's not really any less system heavy though, it just has less features.

I don't think Home Basic even has Aero Glass. Who wants to stare at the light blue theme?

Crumbs, started a war here lol

Perhaps I should say that he connects his PC upto a network of other PC's but I don't think it is DOMAIN based.

What features might be useful in Ultimate that Home Premium lacks?

Matthew

Checked out the link, the worst limitations being only 1 cpu (multiple cores ok though), and only 8gb of RAM. I think it sufficient till windows Vista upgrade / Vista 2 aka Windows 7 comes along.

Will suggest Home Premium :)
