Hi Everyone,

I am and have been since I started building my own pcs an AMD user. primarily because of a combination of cost and good performance in gaming, I generally went this route.

However, I am now wanting to go the Core2Duo route and have decided on a Conroe 6600, 2GB Corsair XMS DDR2 800 (4:4:4:12) and a motherboard which will either be an Asus PB5 Deluxe or the Asus PW5 DH Deluxe.

Can someone advise me as to which one is better for gettin me to a 3.0GHz overclock? Will the memory achieve this? I want a future proofed setup of sorts, particularly graphics, so crossfire support is ok here with PW5.

Please help as I am in a twist as to what to get motherboard wise.

Regards,

emissary

hmm do you really need a 6600 over a 6400 if you want to hit 3Ghz?

6400 should be able to hit 3.2Ghz quite easily (8x multiplier on a 400FSB).

also, if you want to future proof have you considered SLI/Nvidia GFX as if you want to buy a new gfx card now the only "future" proof gfx cards are the nvidia 8800 series at the moment until the new ATi's come out...

im not keen on asus either:/

Thanks for the quick reply. My main use for the setup is primarily multimedia and using vmserver with work related apps. I do also like the odd game on my 1280x1024 Iiyama which has been the best monitor I have ever bought!

Which brings me to my next point and DX10. With regards to games, I have been and will continue to run my Evga 256mb 7900GT CO which is fine right now.

Will this mobo allow me to connect a single Nvidia 8800 GTX and take advantage of DX10 when it is finally implemented en mass like DX9?

This seems to be the only thing holding me back right now, I als have an existing Tagan 550W PSU, will this be enough for the OC duties?

Thanks for any futher advice.

The 8800 GTX is a normal PCIe card so if your board takes PCIe there shouldn't be any problems installing it.

Your PSU might be a bit on the weak side for a 8800GTX but should be fine for the moment. I had a Tagan 480W for years and it was a very good PSU and quiet too :)

Just to confirm, my Tagan is 580W. I am more concerend at the moment that it will be adequate for ocing the Conroe to 3.0-3.2GHz on stock cooling.

Can anyone suggest otherwise?

Thanks,

emissary.
