Thank you

if you can spare an extra £33 you can get some nice high quality components. that 200W unbranded PSU worries me

just had a quick look at my 2nd favourite CPU benchmark site:
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

passmark (higher is better):
athlon II X2 250: 1713
E3400: 1707
E6600: 1507

so on that basis, an E3400 rig will be just as good as what i specced before. it will save you it will save you a little cash too.

its down to £213 now that ove noticed your happy with just 2GB of ram. it was also a bit cheeky of me to put the today only deal on the ram in my spec, since you probably wont be ordering today. that has now been replaced with the corsair value 2GB stick

may i ask why you want an mATX motherboard?

Am I blind or is he suppose to just put this on his desk :) I don't see a case.

you might want to go to the opticians. the coolermaster elite 342 was a case last time i checked (which was about 2s ago because i have one myself.

if your wondering, its a great piece of kit for the price, but as a gamer it is hampering me a bit as there are no cable tidying options, and the majority high end custom coolers wouldnt fit because the side panel wouldnt fit on
(my zalman, the shortest high end cooler i could find, touches the side of my case)

Hey!
Hmm a very nice spec up there with the Corsair PSU. To be honest, id be more temped towards that. I specifically went for a Corsair one in my last build knowing their quality!

Only reason I wanted a mATX m/b along with case so I could have a really small unit. I dont really want something big as just want this to sit in the corner so I can remote login ideally! Ill definately consider your spec but the 800fsb processor sticks out compared to the 1066 e6600?

the elite 342 is a nice small case. it'll be perfect for what you need.

i was also surprised that the lower numbered processor came out top
*edit*
the E3400 uses 45nm transistors, whereas the E6600 uses 65nm transistors. smaller transistors = newer tech = faster usually
*/edit*

one thing i ahve just remembered is that this motherboard doesnt support overclocking (at least i think it doesnt). however, you would need a custom cooler to overclock the PC anyway

I would personally opt for an AMD build. It would probably work out around £210 maybe just under.

The Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2 (£36) would take the Athlon X2 250 (£45). However it supports the phenom ii X4s and the hexcores. When bulldozer hits, these quad and hexcores have to drop in price, would be nice if the OP was in a position to upgrade to them once they are cheap cheap like the budgie.

The coolermaster 430 case can be bundled with a 500W supply (£64). If you add the remaining parts needed from reapers spec (post #8) to finish the build it should tally up just over your budget. Considering the upgrade possibilites and the inclusion of a reasonable branded PSU it would make sense........well in my opinion anyways.

Good luck with the build, any Qs or problems you know where we are.

that was pretty much the spec i removed from my first post. it came to ~£235

however, the OP wanted a small mATX case, so i went with the elite 342 and a better quality PSU than the one that comes bundled with the 430.

this upgrade leaves the option to upgrade to a Q6600 though, which is nearly as good as the phenom II's (very similar clock for clock, but just cant overclock quite as much)

I know budgets are there for a reason but £10-20 extra can make a big difference sometimes.

Myself i would seriously consider an AM3+ mobo (£50ish). This covers those low athlon, the phenom iis, hexcore and the yet released bulldozer cpus. It's down to the OP really wether he thinks it's worth the extra money over the AM3.

like this:
YOUR BASKET
1 x Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 AMD 760G (Socket AM3+) DDR3 Motherboard £54.98
1 x AMD Athlon II X2 Dual Core 250 3.00GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £44.99

Yip Pretty much. A cheap AM3 only (equivalent of the intel G41) mobo would be £20 less but you lose BD support and the HDMI output on the IGP amongst other good features . Surely the OP qualifies for free P&P so we can knock £11 off your spec ;)

*EDIT* Reaper you edited your post (#4) that mobo is DDR2 you spec'd DDR3. The gigabyte AM3 -S2 mobo is the same price roughly and DDR3. I'm sure you clicked the wrong one by accident

I very much appreciate everybodys comments here but I am going to be pain! Im not looking to overclock this, or upgrade in future and I do not want an AMD build sorry!!

ah thanks for pointing that difference out between the e6600 and e3400!
