There is absolutley no advantage in buying a Nehalem/X58 rig over a 775 based rig for gaming. Nehalem has shown little or no increase in gaming performance over a solid 775 based system. Personally i think that £804 for a cpu/mobo/3Gb ram is obscene. A similar 775 spec would cost half of that and that's with 4Gb of ram, a Q9450 quad core and some good 4Gb DDR2. Knock another £100 off for a E8500 dual core based rig which is currently the best option for gaming as there are precious few games that make use of the extra cores. The choice is yours however.

That's not true, with single cards the difference is basically zero but with a 4870x2 the Core i7 does pull ahead quite a bit. Not that any game demands that power presently but to say there is no advantage to Core i7 is provably false. See here, for example:

Tom's Hardware is hardly the best site on the net but the gains shown simply do not justify the extra cost in my opinion. Everyone knows that to make the most of a 4870x2 you need a quad core to unleash it's full power. Going with the 775 platform cut's that cost in half. Like i said though, it's completely up to the OP.
