I am building a general purpose family computer my budget is £300 for just the box. It will be used for Surfing the net, Office and some low level graphics using Photoshop. I have come up with the following spec - What do you think?

OCUK Value 1g31A-CFS Intel G31 (Socket 775) PCI Express DDR Mother Board
£52.86
OcUK 2GB (2 x 1 GB) PC2 -6400C5 800 Mhz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit
£28.19
Pioneer DVR-212DBK 18x DVD SATA Dual Layer Rewriter (Black) QEM
£21.14
Intel Core 2 Duo E2180 ‘LGA775 Conroe’ 2.00GHz (800FSB) Retail
£54.04
Antec NSK 4480 Mini Tower Case (Silver) – 380W Earth Watts PSU
£54.54
Samsung SpinPoint S 160GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD161HJ)
£34.06
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic 32-Bit Edition DVD - OEM - 1Pk (66G-00576)
£56.39

Total: £301.32

Will the components be Vista friendly?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Welcome to the forums, it all looks fine although I might consider getting Vista 64bit just in case you will upgrade the Ram in future. Also you might prefer a silver DVDRW to match the case.

Firstly Welcome to the forums/read the faq if you plan on staying ;)

I agree looks nice but I would choose 64bit, for the reason mentioned by semi-pro waster. I'd look at the sony drive for the silver option faster read/write time for the same money.

Just a quick bit of feedback!

Collected the parts this morning and built it today. No problems - I know Vista gets a lot of stick but installing the OS was very easy. All the relevant drivers just installed themselves!

The CD that came with the mother board wasn't a lot of good, it appears to be 32bit.

Only problem I had was that I didn't realise that the MB needed two power supplies, its been a while since I last built anything! At first I thought I had a faulty MB, the fans spun but nothing else happened. Plugged the power in and we were off! Have to say SATA makes life easier :-)

Only things I missed were buying a SATA lead for the DVD and a Sound lead for the DVD...

One observation, the power LED is a three pronged plug, using the two outside ones, where as the MB plug is two prongs....? So just left it off.

All in all mission accomplished, Thank you very much for your help.
