I wonder if you can advise if these temperatures sound normal?

I have just applied some Arctic Cooling thermal paste to my I7 920 cpu and Titan Fenrir cooler and the temperature results are as follows:

Idle - CPU 36 degrees, Motherboard 39 degrees

After a few hours of installing programs and downloading patches the cpu settled around the 38 mark and m/b at 41 degrees.

I thought these were ok but then I rebooted the pc and went into the bios, it posted temps of 43degrees for the cpu and 42 for the m/b and all of a sudden the fan was spinning faster. Going back into windows and using asus probe II sure enough 45 degrees now and m/n still at 42.

Just a bit concerned that the cpu temp has risen even while doing nothing.

P.S. nothing has been overclocked.

Would appreciate your thoughts.

That temp is still withing normal limits I think. Nothing to worry about.

It could be as simple as the ambiant temperature rising during that time.

For example last night I was doing some temp testing on my i5 rig and was seeing 27 at idle, wifey came in saying it was cold so put the electric fire on for a bit, low and behold my i5 was now idling at 29-30.

Go and download realtemp and prime 95, once you have them both run them them take note of the max load temps in realtemp after running prime for lets say 10min and report back, will able to advise from there.

I'll try and download those tonight.

This was the first time i had applied thermal paste so i was concerned i had maybe used too much/not enough and when i read roids post that he's idling at 27 it worries especially as i'm using what is considered to be one of the best coolers in the titan fenrir

Cheers Big
There's a tendancy to get obsessed with the temps especially when it's running on your desktop and you eyes is strangly drawn to it ;)

As a matter of interest what is the best method for applying the paste, one big blob in the midddle, a couple of long lines, or spread all over the cpu?

ye their fine temperatures, my q6600 stock clocks and cooler runs at 33* for cpu 25 in case temp but altho the radiator isnt rly next to the case it rises by roughly 1 degree at least. id only be worried if incase temp is 50ish, do u ahve fans blowing air into the case.

a lot of people have different views on how to apply and of course depends on their experience. I put apply paste on average 2-3 times a week(personal & work) over the last year i have put a line on one the sides of the cpu and dragged it accros to the other with a credit card. I find a get better coverage doing this temps differ about 1-2c rather using the blob method but this could be down to room temp or even the passing of wind :p In the end i would say it preference over performance mate

Cheers again Big I may try reseating it again.

And SFNX i have a silverstone FT01 case which has the big fan at front and on top blowing in with 1 fan at rear blowing out.
In cooling terms those amount of fans don't sound much but it recently did well in a custom pc round up. But it's certainly no match for the antec 902 for sheer cooling power.

Well last night i downloaded & ran realtemp and prime95 and received the following results:
At idle i got 38-37-41-37
Then running their torture tests i got:
58-58-60-56

I left them running maybe 30 minutes, i read that some people leave these tests running all night but baring in mind i hadn't overclocked anything i thought 30 mins was long enough.

After i got those figures i thought i would try redoing the the thermal paste just for my own info and i followed a guide where it said to apply it using your finger in a food bag! It didn't go well and i knew instantly i hadn't used enough. So i tried again using Big Bruisers method a line of thermal paste down one side then drag across but i founf this a really tricky job as it always seemed to leave a bar area, anyway i finally got it and i re-ran the prime95 tests and got the following results
Idle 36-36-38-35
Load 56-57-58-55

Do these results seem ok?

The temperature reported in the BIOS is almost always higher than the idle temperature. The reasons given for this vary, but I've certainly noticed it to be true.

It means that you can use the BIOS as a basic stress tester. (Prime 95 will get it hotter though).

I don't know why your temperatures in windows would then rise as well. (Unless you didn't leave it idling for long enough?)

From what i've heard, in-BIOS temps are higher because there's nothing running to control the temperature. When you get into windows there are power saving programs and stuff that keep it running cooler... Cool 'n Quiet/SpeedStep don't run when you're in the BIOS.

I used the search and read through some fenrir threads 4ghz cooling temps seem to 85-90c not great at all, a lot of people dont seem happy with its cooling in i7 however this could be down to applying the paste which a little tricky, there is a thread on here somewhere that guides you through the process just on that cooler.

Yeah, that's definitely one reason that's given.

Other people think that the BIOS is deliberately working the CPU in order to raise the temps a bit.

Yeah, it could be. Would the entire bios be loaded into the CPU to make it run properly? That would definitely explain it.

Cheers guys but can you confirm or not if my temps seem ok?

Also the asus p6t deluxe v2 has the option of sticking a 40mm fan onto the northbridge to reduce motherboard temps, as mine are about 40degress is that something i should consider?

Yeah, your temps seem fine. That small increase is going to be due to ambient temps. If you want to get it cooler, get some better case fans, or some case fans if you haven't got any yet.

You need good airflow to keep the temp down :)

cheers andy

I have a good case the silverstone FT-01 which has good cooling it's just my pc case is stuck away under a desk and i think this hampers it slightly regarding airflow.

Just wondered really if i needed that extra small fan on the motherboard or is it not worth the hassle for a motherboard temp of say 40-42 degrees?
