Hi Folks,

Well I am back in the UK and am now waiting for my Rebate for last year (I only worked half of it so I should get a good rebate).

I have sketched out a new system I like, If I can I would like to try and cut costs without a huge hit to performance so if you have any ideas please let me know. I should be ordering this lot before the end of January.

Your basket

Razer Baracuda HP-1 Gaming Headset £80.95

BFG GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £329.99 (Do I really need this card or would I be better off going for the GTS? I want to run everything at the Native res on the Dell at High Quality)

Samsung SpinPoint T HD401LJ 400GB SATA-II 16MB Cache - OEM £72.99

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-8500C5 TwinX (2x1GB) £219.99

Akasa AK-ICR-01 Internal Card Reader £9.99 (do I need this or does the Dell have a card reader built in?)

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) £13.99

Intel Core 2 DUO E6600 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) - OEM £177.99

EVGA nForce 680 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £163.99

Pioneer DVR-111BK 16x16 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter - (Black) OEM £18.35

Dell Ultrasharp 2407WFP 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Midnight Grey £459.99 (I think this is better than the BenQ atm because it is about 150 cheaper. Does it support HD properly or not as I have read there are some problems)

Antec Nine Hundred Ultimate Gaming case £63.99 (I wanted the P180 more but I was worried about the 8800GTX not fitting)

Seasonic S12 Energy+ 550W Silent ATX2.0 Power Supply £74.99 (Is this powerful enough for my set up?)

Saitek PZ30AU Eclipse Illuminated Keyboard - Blue £23.99

Razer Diamondback Plasma 1600dpi Gaming Mouse Limited Edition - Retail £29.99

Sub Total : £1,741.18

Because of the nature of the components in ths PC I will be trying for a modest OC on the Conroe. Ideally I would like it to be equal to a 6700.

looks like a beast mate:cool:, but id be going for a bigger psu, 700w at least, i rate OCZ and there new 850w looks great for the money

stinka

looks good :) but your ram is kinda over specced unles you going to do very heavy overclocking. you coudl save ya self £60 and get this one

Corsair 2GB DDR2 XMS2 Dominator PC2-6400C4 TwinX (2x1GB) £199.74 it has tighter timings than the one you mentioned.

allthogh is that one of them boards were you dont have to run the ram linkied to the cpu ? either way my recomendation stands and you could allways get a cheaper board. and not see and save another £50-£60 there :)

To be honest, that e6600 will do that overclock lying down, in terms of these processors a 'modest' clock is around 3.2Ghz. Get yourself a good power supply and tyou wont have to worry about the rest of your components.

Ok, I have had a look at the comments and after taking on board what has been said I have changed my spec a little:

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775) £13.99

For the time being I have dropped the LCD. I have a good 22" CRT that can fill in until I am back to work and able to really afford a new LCD. The other parts can be salvaged off my current PC (mouse, keyboard, speakers and headset).

I know I should not skimp on a PSU however my current system has run for years no problem with a Zalman 400W PSU will the Corsair be enough or should I get the 620W model? I dont intend to use SLi at this stage.

Quick question to thefishdude. What is the Antec P180 case like? I cant decide between that and my current selection the Antec Gaming 900. I like the Idea of the P180 front fan better and the fact it has dust filters however I have been concerned about the room in the case for the 8800GTS and GTX. Will there be enough room. Keep in mind I dont intend to use SLi at this stage but may wish to later.

yeah the p180 has 2 fronts fans comoplete with filters. 1 at bottom for the lower hdd+psu chamber and one above that for the main area.

as for room i only have a 1950 pro in mine, but i undertsnad the gtx is a lot longer. if you did have the gtx i think you may need to remove the upper hdd cage wich would then limit you to 4hdd in the lower section. i dont have the uper hdd cage in mine anyway i forgot to put it back wired everything up and used the space for sticking wires in at wich point i noticed it on the table lol soo juust left mine out as i got 3hdd in lower section anyway.

the psu in the bottom does add to the byuild time as it can complicate things. and make wiring tidy harder

Cheers. I have gone for a modular PSU anyway in an effort to keep the inside of the case as tidy as possible. My first build was a Athlon XP system in a Coolermaster Pertorian case and it took me a long time to learn to get the system nice and tidy.

Is there anyone else who can comment on the PSU. I was thinking of upgrading to the 620W Corsair. Will this be better in the long run? Also is this PSU noisy or not. I dont mind some fan noise but if it is quite loud I may look at a different PSU.
