Hi, I want to build a fileserver but i'm on a major budget. I already have the hdd (2.2Tb worth) to spare so i'm going to stick 4xsata into whatever box i make.
I want it to be silent. It needs to stay on all the time. Obviously (maybe not?) there aren't any fanless PSUs that i can see, so i'm hoping this will be the only fan in the system.

Here goes;
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 3800+ (Socket 939) - OEM - £39.94
Asrock 939NF6G-VSTA Micro ATX (Socket 939) PCI-Express DDR Motherboard - £46.99
Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B Heatpipe CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA755) - £29.36
Akasa Ultra Quiet 400W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.2 PSU - Black Nickel - £41.11
Akasa AK-ZEN-01-WH Zen White Case - No PSU - £30.54
Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-4200C4 Dual Channel Kit (CT2KIT12864AA53E) - £52.86

I'm hoping the Syth will be able to handle the CPU. I'm willing to clock it down if necessary, it won't be doing anything taxing at all. Most of the time 3/4 of the hdd will be idle/shutdown.
It'll run hot, i have no doubt about that, but it's cheap components so..

Let me know if this will work (esp with the memory because i don't get the whole DDR4 thing that the mobo supports)

thanks a lot,
Stubbsy

That memory won't work with that motherboard. You need either a DDR2 motherboard or DDR memory. Any particular reason you went with socket 939 rather than AM2?

As said socket 939 motherboards only supports DDR RAM. You would be better off going AM2 if your going AMD. Since AM2 processors are generally cheaper due to them being easier to source and they use DDR2 ram which is actually cheaper than DDR 1 now.

Ah ok thanks guys; update then
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz (Socket AM2) - Retail - £37.59
Abit AN52 nForce 520 (Socket AM2) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £46.99

so a slightly cheaper processor and the same price of mobo

rest of the spec is the same at
Scythe Ninja Plus Rev.B Heatpipe CPU Cooler (Socket 478/754/939/940/AM2/LGA755) - £29.36
Akasa Ultra Quiet 400W Paxpower Active PFC ATX2.2 PSU - Black Nickel - £41.11
Akasa AK-ZEN-01-WH Zen White Case - No PSU - £30.54
Crucial 2GB (2x1GB) DDR2 PC2-4200C4 Dual Channel Kit (CT2KIT12864AA53E) - £52.86

any further comments?
will the mobo come with SATA cables or do these come with retail hdd, i can't remember, only know that i don't have enough at the moment!
thanks

Serial ATA cables normally come with the motherboard, I'd guess a retail HDD would come with one but I've never bought a retail HDD, always buy oem.
