I would greatly appreciate any advice on my upgrade. CPU performance is a priority for some of my favourite games but I don't really want quad core as it consumes too much juice and I will only ever use ATi cards.
I already have these items at my disposal: PSU, hard/drives, case, watercooling parts (120.1) and stock Vapochill.
2x OCZ 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C4 Dual Channel Platinum Revision 2 XTC Series DDR2 (OCZ2P800R22GK) £28.99(£34.06) £57.98(£68.12)
OcUK Value L2442W 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black £209.99(£246.74) £209.99
Asus P5E Intel X38 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £119.99(£140.99) £119.99(£140.99)
Asus P5Kc Combo P35 (Socket 775) DDR2 and DDR3 MotherboardThis board is so much cheaper but which board clocks higher?
EK Supreme Acetal (Socket A,754,939,AM2, 478 and LGA 775) CPU Water Block £30.99(£36.41) £30.99(£36.41)
OcUK ATI Radeon HD 3850 Pro 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail £89.99(£105.74) £89.99(£105.74)
CPU: Core 2 Duo E2180 or Q6600Which clocks higher on air, water and phase?
max total: 775
Finally, should I wait for Penyrn(Yorkfield) since its got a lot more cache?

both the e2180 and q6600 will OC to between 3.2-3.6GHz on average, the difference is the cache and number of cores. the q6600 is also hotter due to the extra 2 cores.

both the x38 and p35 chipsets can OC both cpus to their average overclocks clocks, maybe higher with ease.

for a 24" monitor it may be a good idea to drop your "I will only ever use ATi card" position if you can find extra funds for a 8800GT/GTS as it will be a much better card.

Only 3.6? I thought the latest batches of Q6600s almost guaranteed 4Ghz on a vapochill.
Is a E8400 wolfdale (3Mb L2) worth it over say an E2180 (512kb L2)?
And are those chipsets Wolfdale compatible out of the box?

sorry i was talkign about average on air cooling, although there are people who got theirs to 4 on air.

cache rarely affects performance a great deal, search for the comparison charts between 2 and 4 mb cache with the c2ds to get a bit of info.

wolfdale should be in theory as the p35 and x38 supports 45nm chips, you may want to check a cpu compatibility list to make sure if the first bios version supports them though
