Looking into building a new rig, (up grade from AMD 939 set up) soon to be running Vista 64 bit…..

I gather that Socket 775 is the way to go, so please advise with Mobo choice.
One problem I notice is the lack of IDE support for CD & DVD RW

I was told that the Gigabyte 965P DS3 was a good option

As regards to the IDE part of ** post: u hav the option to use SATA hard drives (they use SATA cables instead of standard ribbon cables) that means that if u get a new mother board 9 a more modern board) u can use the precious IDE ports for ** CD drives.

Yes I appreciate I will need to go for Vista 64bit; I did mention this in my first post (soon to be running Vista 64 bit…..)

Anyway looks like I will be getting a Gigabyte GA_P35_DS3R, One question however, is Socket 775 and Intel the way to go, not so long ago I moved from an P4 set up onto a 939 / 146 Opteron as that was thought to be the way to go.

All I need to do now is try and understand the differences in Intel CPUs

Basically, Intel reworked their processor from ground-up just like the AMD 64s. So not only are they faster/efficient, they overclock very well thanks to 65nm fabrication ;)

How about...

NVIDIA's nForce 650i chipset has 2-IDE ports therefore, can take up to 4 IDE/PATA devices ;)

OK then guys, what are the preferred 775 mobo, Asus, Gigabyte, or Asrock and one last question how about some of the Overclocker bundles? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=339

Asrock are budget boards - they have the virtue of being inexpensive but lack many of the bells and whistles of the more expensive brands. In particular they tend not to overclock well.

Asus and Gigabyte both have good boards in their range, but if limited IDE ports is an issue then the Asus P5NE-sli offers the best value for you. Another manufacturer to consider is Abit - the Quad Gt in particular is highly thought of although at a slightly higher price than the Gigabyte equivalent.

If u get a p35 board u can have a clear upgrade path from cheap e2140 £60 to quad cores which currently are £500 in some cases.

I would get either the cheap e2140 or a e6700/e6750.

The exx50 denotes extra cache where the exx00 does not already have 4Mb cache. If it does then exx50 denotes an increased default fsb speed from 1066 to 1333fsb.

There will be a few new models and price cuts on the 22nd apparently.

Also the new steppings of e6750 have been getting 4.2Ghz+ on air.

I would probably have stayed with AMD if they hadnt made socket 939 obsolete.

Less than £300 for that lot including a gfx card??! Blimey! I'm tempted to just click on buy right now! :D I don't usually go the overclocking route so I guess I wouldn't really need the fancy CPU cooler.

...... actually the gfx card on that list is a bit pants isn't it? At the moment I have an AGP GForce 6800LE. Is it better than that?

What do you expect for £30?

According to this table it is roughly on a par with what you have already got although you may find that it will be a slight improvement due to being PCIe rather than AGP.

I have 2 pcs both with DS3's. One is a rev 1. and the other a 3.3 Ive never had any problems with either board. Im running 2x1gb GeIL ULL ram in one, and OCZ 2x2gb 800Mhz in the other. That sticky is pretty old (oct 2006) and the DS3 board is very popular.

So for £30 I get a PCI-E gfx card that performs about the same as my, at time of buying of course, £150 6800LE? I guess then I could get a pretty **** hot PCI-E gfx card for around £100 these days? What would be a good card for £100? I've noticed a lot of the newer cards have dual DVI. Can I not hook up an AVI monitor then?
