Please enter setup to recover BIOS settings

System (sig) has been rock solid for nearly 4 years but now on startup it's going "please enter setup to recover BIOS settings". If I just exit BIOS without changing anything, it does boot but what's wrong?

Google said to reset CMOS or replace battery on motherboard - is this right or necessary?

i7 67000K was running @ 4.6 but now seems to be at 4000.

Any advice/options greatly appreciated?

most likely the CMOS battery is flat.

Pop it out of the board to get the type and ebay a cheap pack of two.

Once the new battery is in you'll get the error once more then should be fine once you save it.

The battery keeps the BIOS settings stored on a CMOS chip (like a SNES save file on a cart). Once the battery is flat the system can't keep the chip powered and the BIOS settings are lost.

Loosing the time is a sure sign of depleted battery.
