Could somebody please explain how insurance companies group vehicles?

I'm sitting here totally baffled at why a 1.7 Puma is insurance group 13?

My Saxo is faster than a Puma and it's 6 places lower down the insurance ranks.

Is there something I am missing with these Puma's? Like they are supercharged :p

Plus insurance "groupings" dont have an insane bearing on insurance premiums. I drive a group 14 car at 18 and pay less than most of my mates.
Plus many more VTR's are wrapped round trees a year than many other cars - hence the increase in cover price.

Problem I am finding is, nobody will touch me until I am 21 because it's above group 10.

It costs considerably more to fix which is a major factor, plus the puma is probably statistically a safer car when hitting others.

Nowt to do with some notional speed.

Would that not make a faster Saxo with it's 2* ncap higher in insurance groups?

Take a C2 VTS for instance, insurance group 8, 130bhp (or round that figure) 0-60 8 secs, 5* Ncap.......insurance gp 8.
