Commandos, pretty old now, but the original few are great: behind enemy lines, beyond the call of duty, and commandos 2. All can be had for very little. I recently bought number 3, its not as good as the originals though and the newer strike force completely went away from the style (went first person and got rid of lots of stuff). The old ones can be really challenging and really fun too.

Never found any bugs and recently played it all the way through. I'm sure if I looked hard enough that there would be some but there are patches available for it.
Still a great game IMHO.

I say get S.T.A.L.K.E.R and load up with mods 
Bioshock, I've got it lined up for when I finish exams tomorrow .
You say you like RTSs, try picking up the Dawn of War series, it's cheap now and utterly brilliant.
Failing that, if you want to go the classic route and like adventure games, you could check out something like Grim Fandango, that will definitely be something you can sink time into.
You say you have HL2, but what about ep1, ep2 and portal? They're short but are an enjoyable way to spend some time.

Well Aerospace Technology isn't quite particle physics but I think I'll give it a go (X3 that is) so long as I can find it at a good price i.e. cheap

Unreal Tournament 3 (Multilpayer)is awesome, got it for Cristmas and still playing it loads
I see what you mean now, it is quite difficult
