Hi there guys. I recently bought my new computer as detailed in my sig. I decided to use my old IDE HDD as it had served me well and wasn't causing me any problems, So I installed windows on it (legit copy) and all drivers etc. All was good....or so I thought. I turned the computer off at night, then when I went to turn it back on in the morning it didn't want to work. I got an error message saying

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe
Please re-install a copy of the above file. "

So I tried using the recovery console and that still didnt make a difference. so I then formatted the HDD again, and same problem, I could use the computer fine, and it would restart fine when installing drivers etc. Then when I turn the computer off at night and back on in the morning I get the same error message in the morning......This is really starting to annoy me.  I just don't know what the problem could be? A mate of mine thinks it might be the harddrive on the fritz....What do you guys think? I have also tried to different copies both legit of windows xp and still I get the same problem...I tried an old hitachi deskstar HDD, and after it loaded the setup files, and then restarts to start installing windows, I get the error message "A disk read error occured Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart" So I think that HDD is gone as well. Please help me before I go insane....

Should I just order an SATA HDD and get it over and done with?

Thanks in advance....Sorry for the long post

Have you tried a different cable?

Could be the controller is on the fritz if two drives are apparently borked like that, testing a SATA drive would be good.

Found this on Google ;)

first of all Dont Panic!! :)
Second, go here and download that ISO image file, Bart's PE >> http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
Third burn it on a CD as Fatal has described here >> http://65.24.134.81/KipSolutions/BootableCDrom/BartsPE.htm
Forth start your own system, set the boot order in BIOS to boot from the CD first
Fifth insert this Bart's CD and restart the system
System will boot from this CD.. and you will get a windows like envrionment
now from here you can open the contents of your C: drive
there should be a folder called i386 present in C: drive
this folder acts like a WinXP CD in the OEM systems :)

and as now you have this folder, you can easily extract ntoskrnl.exe using this folder :)
to extract it, open C:\Windows\System32 and run cmd
you will get a DOS like window... type expand C:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ C:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe and hit enter
it should copy the file to the correct location
( you can also get this ntoskrnl.exe file from another workign XP system, put it on a floppy and then copy it to the system32 folder)

After that restart and take out the Bart' PE CD and now check if the system can boot or not

Yeah I have tried to different cables, and both times it doesn't seem to work. I haven't got an SATA drive that i can try unfortunately, as I didn't order one thinking that this drive would be ok :(

Any other helpers......this **** PE builder doesn't want to work, even though I've used the windows installation CD and given it right path. I even made sure the file was on the CD because I did a search for it, I gave it the path and it still doesn't work......Now im getting mad

Pleas help if you can
