Ok so I am a bit useless when it comes to sorting things on my computer out but im wondering if you lot can help me.
I get my broadband from Homecall and earlier this month I upgraded from a 1 meg connection to an (upto) 8 meg one. Since then I have had no end of bother. My 1meg was fine, no problems at all.
I am usually on MSN in the evenings and since I upgraded MSN keeps signing me in and out for no apparent reason.
I have been ringing tech support who have given me various reasons for this happening. They told me I am 310m from the exchange so I should be able to get the higher speeds. Then they kindly informed me that I was going through a "stabilisation period" (that they forgot to tell me about until after I renewed my contract with them) and for 10 days after they upgraded me I could expect fluctuating levels of speed.
The 10 days was up on Saturday and on Thursday and Friday my speed (I have been running a speed checker on it) dropped as low as 30kbps (yes I did type that right)
I cant understand:-
a) why if I was on a 1meg connection it is dropping so much - I am now struggling to get above half a meg
and
b) Why this would affect my MSN, my messages arent getting through to people and it keeps signing me in and out.

Can anyone give me any advice on what to do, or what I can try, or what I can say to Homecall on the phone to make me sound like I mean business. Today they have tried to say its a fault with the line despite them testing it before I upgraded and they said I should be able to get a higher speed due to being so close to the exchange.

Sorry for the long post and sorry if I have put this in the wrong forum but I really am at a loss as to what to do next.

If one of the Mods wants to move this thread then thats fine I just want some help.
Im going nuts!!!

Possibly something like Ad/Spy ware on your connection causing problems? or a hardware issue? are you using a router that may be causing trouble? Ie a Wireless router somtimes deminishes overall speed and reliability of your connection?

I have tried plugging the old modem back in, the one I had supplied from my ISP, but that doesnt make any difference.
What do you mean about the Spyware. I have the latest version of Norton and I have adaware. Its only been since the upgrade though that it started doing this. (and I had both programmes on here before I upgraded)

Problem is that some programs pick up Spyware that others miss that may slow your connection down some, and make you sign out of MSN, so its best to install more than one program..

Norton = Pants, Install AVG :p

Try running Spybot S&D also...
