I have just finished building my PC & had it running now for about 2 hours & messing around in the BIOS.

I have just noticed that it is showing my CPU temp is at 87 degrees C.

Please any advice would be appreciated.

I have just taken off the heatsink & fan which came with the CPU.

There was already thermal paste on the bottom of the heatsink so I have just seated it on top of the cpu & pushed down the 4 connectors securing it into place so it doesn't budge.

The fan is connected to the cpu fan connector as instrucetd.

I took off the heatsink & took out the cpu to make sure it was seated correctly & there are no scratches or anything else.

It doesn't loke concave. It looks fine.

I have now put the cpu back in & replaced the heatsink & fan.

However, when I now turn on the system & enter the bios within a few seconds it turns itself off.

But like Servo said I can only imagine it's a faulty heatsink.

Or do you think that the default settings on the motherboard are over the top as mentioned earlier as what should be the correct settings?

I can only presume it's turning itself off because the cpu is getting too hot.

What I am going to do tomorrow is buy the Arctic freezer pro heatsink & fan & clean off the thermal paste which is already on the cpu & re-apply then fit the new heatsink & fan.

If I still have a problem then my only other option would be to return the cpu under warranty.

Any other recommendations?

Just installed the Freezer Pro & had my pc running in bios now for over 1 hour.

The temps have dropped to: -

54 degrees CPU
54 degrees Motherboard.

Do these figures still seem high considering it's a quad core?

I think they are as I am concerned that once I start using the processor the temps will shoot up.

The fans I have installed are one from the Corsair PSU which is pointing down.
a fan at the rear of the case to expell hot air. 1 fan at the front to bring in cool air. Obviously, the cpu heatsink & fan & a fan on the gpu.

On the fan control in the bios the cpu fan control has an option of q-fan.

What is this & should this be selected?

I have got the temps down even further now to: -

Mobo:40 degrees
CPU: 42 degrees

I know what your all gonna say under your breaths & I don't blame you because I am a muppet even for a beginner.

I had the heat sink on the wrong way round so it was blowing the hot air back into the system on the new freezer pro & purchased today.

I re-fitted it but first of all applied fresh paste & at the mo it's sitting on 42 degrees.

Do you think this is ok?

Just installed windows vista premium & the temp software i got with the motherboard is reading the cpu temp @ 32 degrees.

I am relieved & want to thank you all for your advice.

Thanks.
