i am desperate to find out if and how there is a way to backup a dvd and emerge into one file.

you can download films at 700mb which play in windows media player, these arnt rare as there everywhere in file sharing places, there next to perfect quality,

so how do you do this... make it into one file and make it 700mb or near that.

i can backup a dvd no hassle, but then you left with 20+ files, im trying to find a dvd file emerger, im not sure if thats the rite thing i am looking for though,

would be apreciated if i had some help, im sure someone in here has done this before

thanks

The rules of this forum are that you cannot discuss anything illegal (both directly or by implication). The films you download may or may not be copyright protected but since you have not specified exactly what it is no one will answer you as they could be implicated and subsequently banned for discussing illegal practises, (particulary since you mention file sharing which is where most dodgy content comes from).

If you are in any doubt about the rules see the FAQ on the main page. I am not trying to sound like a school teacher here but I know that many people (including myself sometimes) do not read the agreements we are signing up to when we click that button, and this forum has a strict policy on some areas of discussion.

The proliferation of file sharing utilities and easily accessable files means that many people do not stop to think if what they are doing is legal or not, and I would hate for someone to get banned and feel that no one told or warmed them.

Backing up Dvds are not ilegal ! Totally NOT ilegal !

if it was i wouldnt of posted it...because i HAVE actually read the rules..i dont know what makes you think backing up Dvds is ilegal.

COPYING them are ilegal, Not backing up, to back up you MUST have the original copy, this is amateur stuff im saying.

you should already know, im sure you do, its just as ive been told and ive experienced people try to dig deep to prove people wrong

so as i was saying

You mean converting it into one (1) AVI, etc file? If so, TOTALLY illegal, see here :(

On the other hand, if you mean merge into 1 file while it remains in or as a DVD format then that can not be done!
yeh kinda mate, like i see 24 different files....

VOB ones as you said, theres only 4 files which are 3 1gb files and 1 500mb file...all the rest are 16kb..but i can double click on the first 1gb file and it will emerge all them files into one to play the whole film as it would off the dvd.....

so all i wanted to do is merge them all so i couldnt see any of the other files... but they are still there.. if you know what i mean...just to save space basically... and so it looks tidier ;) :D

if thats ilegal then god help us lol :p

hmm maybe there could be a program that sorts them out.. like i tunes does with music...ah well maybe just me being to hopefull hehe

thanks

ive just had a look at them laws it states

Indivuals who make a copy of a COPYRIGHTED DVD, CD or music file, whether for back-up or for use on another device such as an MP3 player, are committing a crime.

so i back up blade 2....its actually not copyrighted as nero is a legal backup program and CAN NOT get past copyright protection.. so its totally legal ;)

Please accept my apologies if I read your post wrongly, just when you said the following;

I had thought you were talking about downloading movies which are copyrighted. I realise now you were asking how to make a purchased DVD into a smaller single file of the type you download.

As has been mentioned, making any copy of a copyrighted movie (even for backup) is also ilegal. However many people do this to view their purchased DVD movies on their IPOD.

I know you may have been thorugh this with the Police but I work for a company that specialises in patents and copyrights, from that I know and accept the law is grey in these areas. But to say that because you can use Nero to copy a DVD then it must be OK is absolutely wrong. Responsibility is with the individual and the makers of Nero have a disclaimer in the product that says its your job to check if its legal to copy or not. Usually it is use of the material (selling or sharing) is what will get you burned rather then the act of copying.

I think making a backup is tolerated by authorities but you can't turn the media into another format and then call it a backup. To call it a backup it would need to be an identical copy, (ie a DVD disc that you kept in case the original broke) turning it into an avi or mpeg makes it into a format that is easier to distribute and this would take it outside the "grey" backup area into the black of copyright breach.

I don't want to get into a debate about copyright or argue with you, but you must understand that because this is a forum owned by a company that sells the hardware that could be used for illegal purposes the rules are very strict about this type of thing.

I can only suggest you have a nosey round the hydrogen audio forums, there are a few tutorials on this very subject there.

No offence intended.
if the DVD does not have copyright surely its LEGAL to backup.. thats what i was saying... i know if the dvd has copyright any plonker knows its ilegal to copy/backup ect..

i did not say i wanted to CHANGE OR CONVERT THE DVD

ok i will explain and try and put in everything what i mean because on here if you say one little thing wrong even if its nothing to do with anything you will get a post back for it ..

Ok i went onto nero...Put a none copyrighted blade 2 dvd in... which i bought form a normall shop... for 6.99...i backed the uncopyrighted dvd onto my computer...i still have the original..so its only a back up and not going to be sold or anything . .(nothing ilegal upto now as far as im aware)

now onto the original question !! :p ...i am left with 24 files....there are 4 main files 500mb and 3 1gb ones....if i just click on the first main folder (1gb)...it plays, BUT as far as i know when you click on the first folder it automatically MERGES all the files into one.. to make the dvd again, so it plays like the normall dvd on the computer! i supose like a virtual drive kinda thing,

Now all i want to know if there is or is not any way i can tidy all them folders up by merging or some sort of sorting program (as you see nothing to do with converting or anything like that) so all legal ;)

(all the other files i supose are all dvd features...sounds/menus/extras, ect)

so all in all.basically i just want to tidy my files up...if any of you have backed up before you will know what i mean by all the files

thanks and i respect your replies audilab and everyone else, dont think im trying to argue please :p

No Jimmy, it appears you have a none copy protected Blade 2 disc. And that's the reason why you can copy it with Nero. Your still mixing up copy protection and copy right. Just because something doesn't have copy protection does not automatically mean its not copyrighted.

Blade2 is still under copyright and the studio would certainly not release it without any form of copy protection. If it really is a region free non copy protected copy of Blade2 you have, then I am afraid you have a pirated copy there my friend.

You cannot make a backup of copyrighted DVD's legally in the UK - even if they don't have copy protection. End of story.

dont find end of story very clever to put lol ..but yeh the last 4 or 5 posts have been great help and MUCH clearer thanks
