Hi All,

I'm having some problems with my internet connection.

With Virgin Cable, modem has full set of functioning lights suggesting it's OK.

Router WRT45G lights are ok and status has IP, DNS etc. But I can't connect to the internet through the router, wireless or wired. If I plug straight to the laptop from the modem it works.

Numerous resets of modem and router with appropriate unplugging have not fixed the problem.

Has the router died? I can't think what else it could be.

Anyone?

Is the router a cable router?
Can you connect to the router, yet not connect to the internet?

If so, then either your router won't connect to your modem, or your modem won't connect to your router.

Does the router have a valid IP for its WAN interface?

When connected to the router does the laptop have a valid LAN IP?

The answer to both of the above is yes.

It has a connection to the modem and it has a valid IP address. Laptop reports network connection but local only (tried on several laptops/iPhones)

I can connect to the routers admin page and renew the DCHP lease, which works and reports back both DNS and IP addresses.

OK, so now the router has no IP or DNS and won't get one.

Direct cable to laptop is working fine.

Could it be anything at Virgins end? Or is my router dead?

Regards

Sorted. Thanks for all input see below for what I did:

turn off modem, and router (after resetting it to factory defaults).

Turn on Modem, screw cable connection in, turn router on, connect router to modem, renewed dchp and voila.

I'd done most of that about 20 times, it was the reset factory bit that was new.
