HI all and thanks for all the previous advice on what is better for gaming intel or amd :)

Now from what i can work out that intel seem the better choice, now my question, is the Intel Core i7-3930K 3.20GHz S2011 12MB better than the i72700k and is it woth me paying the extra £200 odd quid, i would hate to spend a small fortune building my 1st pc for gaming and find out i should have got the new Intel Core i7-3930K

Sorry if it is a noob question but i have no idea about these things

Thank you all

Steve

For gaming, there best price/performance option Intel side if the 2500k, neither the 2700k or the 3930k are worth the premium for gaming.

seems being told in his other threads to for the i2500k for gaming is not enough to convince him that i2500k is the one to get, so I guess both of you are wasting your breath ;)

if you insist on spending more than necessary just go the whole hog and get the 3960x ;)

3960x £820
asus rampage iv extreme £320
32gb ram
2x 590
1kw
etc

should last you for a year befor you'll want to upgrade to the latest greatest ;)

Its not that i dont believe you guys, I really dont know about pc's etc and thought that cos the i7 and the new i7 cost's more that must mean its better, and instead of confusing myself even further i asked you guys for the answer :)

Im looking at getting the i5 2500k with the gtx580, just need to think about the motherboard now

Stevek,

For gaming mate get the i5-2500k and a nice GTX 580.

All the other processors (i7-2600k,i7-2700k, any of the 2011 socket cpus) are for heavy processing tasks like Video encoding, rendering anything that can use more then 4 cores and make good use of them. Games don't need that.

Okay i'm going to give you a nice Motherboard, RAM, CPU and a nice GTX 580. That will all work together and give you no stress.

If you want to spend a little more add another 8GB of that same Corsair Ram while their prices are silly cheap. Also remember this motherbaord allows you to use the new Ivy Bridge Processors when they come out next year too, so if you feel the upgrade itch then, you can go Ivy Bridge and also have Gen 3 PCI-E support with that motherboard.

much cheaper and just as good if not planning on sli in the future(tho the triple slot on the graphics card chosen means its not a good idea anyway as it'll restrict airflow) is

i2500k £174

gigabyte z68ap-d3 £85 better choice if you don't need all the extra bells and whistles of the extreme4 gen3

msi 580 tf2 £350 £60 cheaper the asus is only oced a little bit faster

I could sit here and spec you a whole system but stulid has already speced you one in one of your other threads, would suggest you look at that.

Theres currently VAT cashback on the motherboard till the 21st.

I would also preferred to have used reference design GTX580's that dump all the hot air out the back of the card.

the cpu is £174 now, the msi cashback offer is over(also the board is out of stock) and the watercooled case is £400.

you could get the asrock suggested here I guess instead of the msi stulid suggested.

or if you're not in a hurry could wait till tomorrow to see what the new pffers are as the current this week only end tomorrow(not sure what time).

expensive does not always mean better, seeing as you say you don't know much about computers I'd have thought the number of people suggesting a certain cpu would have given you a clue ;)

If you want to know why everyone is recommending the cheaper 2500K, it's because it's the same architecture as the LGA 2011 i7-3930K. For gaming, on the same clock, they perform the same. This is because games can't take advantage of so many threads, recent games can at most use up to four effectively since most of them are console ports (BF3 can use more than four but makes no difference to framerates). Also, they're becoming more GPU dependant, so the extra money is better to go for a beefier graphics card. The Sandy Bridge design pretty much dances through everything without a sweat, so won't become a bottleneck for years to come. Combine with the possible near 5ghz overclock, it's nearly impossible to find a reason to replace the 2500K for gaming.

Thank you for explaining it for me,much appreciated :) i will be getting the i5 now, and a 3 gb gtx 580, and get another one later on, will have a look at the motherboards you's have suggested

Thanks again all

Both AMD and Nvidia are releasing their latest graphics cards in the next few months. I would not be getting a GTX580 3GB ATM.

hmm got him down to the i2500k, now aiming for a £500 card, as I said if you're intent on burning money just get the sb-e 3960x system and be done with it ;)

Next few months could equate like 3 more months, we may's well tell him to wait for Piledriver too.

Buying a GTX580 3GB with GCN and Kepler based GPUs around the corner does not seem a good idea. These are 28NM cards so should have more shader and tesselation power too.

The GTX580 3GB is around £428:

You can get a decent GTX570 for around £245:

There is even a decent HD6950 2GB for around £200:

Oh, I know it's not a good idea.
But for all we know, it could be 3 months away, that's a while to wait.
Personally, I'd just go for a mid range multi GPU set up at this stage in the game.
A 6870 Crossfire can be had at like 260, and blasts a GTX580 to bits. When the 7XXX hit, sell the Crossfire and get the flagship or the two mid range cards.

Thanks guys again :) Fowler002 lol i did say im a newb, but thanks to you guys i am finally starting to get it lol
I wont be wasting my money on the gtx580 now

Would this sound like a good idea?
i5 2500k
a good gen 3 motherboard so i can get the new cpu and gpu when they come out next year
radeon hd6950 ( will this play games on full setting ie bf3 and i would imagine swtor?? ) and then when the new gpu come out i can upgrade to the hd7950 etc

Thanks for all your help guys i do appreciate it :)

If I was in your shoes, I would build a 2500K system and grab something like a £130 6870 for now and save the rest of the money, and when the next gen card are out, sell off the 6870 for may be £80~£90 (so you only loses £40-£50) and then spend all your money on the best graphic, may it be a single high-end, or a SLI/Crossfire mid-range.

Problem with getting a 6950 2GB now is that you are paying like £220 for one, and when the new gen card hit the shelf, the 6950 2GB will hit EOL price and most likely would drop to £125~£130. And in terms of 2nd hand value, a 2nd hand 6950 2GB would probably only worth around £10~15 more than the 2nd hand 6870 by then, despite you paid £90 more when you bought it new.
