Hi.

I've just got a mint powermac g4 dual 1.25ghz MDD pc and loving it :D only problem is, its soooo noisey and I was hoping to use it as a media server/htpc for my hi fi system for now. I've looked at the various websites at replacing the fans etc but what do I replace them with?

I need 1 120mm fan and 2 40mm fans. I recently purchased a silenx fan from OC which is very quiet but doesn't shift enough air and causes the optical fan to kick in and create just as much noise as the original 120mm.

Is there anything that offers a good compromise of shifting air and running quietly.

Thanks

They were called Wind Tunnels for a reason ;)

Not sure there is a huge amount you can do to silence it easily :(

Is that at him or the machine?

If its at him then there *really* isn't a lot you can do... I had one and it was the 867, two stops down...

The apple kit replaced the main fan and the PSU fans and since mine idled at 50-55C with the back removed and a PCI fan...

Watercool it or sell it tbh.

Not a lot you can do I don't think. They were beefy machines for their time and needed beefy cooling as a result. Get an early Mini or such if you want silence.

thanks.

the  was'nt aimed at gumbald I was just hoping to find a quiet 120mm that would shift some air, maybe the noctua will do?

I bought the powermac mdd as I love the look of them and like the fact I can upgrade them with better graphics cards/better sound cards etc unlike the mini.

I might use the mdd as a normal computer and start building a htpc and put OSX 10.5 on it and kill two birds with one stone lol.

Do you know of anyone who has water cooled a g4 mdd? If so I'd be interested to see what they used as I'd like to have a look in to doing something along those lines if it would be possible.

You can't really upgrade them btw... the best you can get is a X800XT IIRC, sound cards... never looked

Fans, quiet + shift air isn't really possible lol and yes someone water-cooled it
