Hello,

I need advice for my next purchase.
Previously I owned Asus rog strix g703gs and screen was terrible. Inverse ghosting because of aggressive overdrive all the time and lower fps (hz) makes things worse. On 60Hz it was awfull (trailing was really really bad) and some games and emulators requires 60fps or lower. Anyway I sold that laptop and want to buy a new one.

I made selection on 3 models based on local availability and price.

Here they are:

Predator Helios 300 (2019) 17"
i7 9750h
gtx1660ti
16GB RAM
fhd display 144hz
and so on.

HP Omen (2019) 17"
i7 9750h
gtx1660ti
16GB RAM
fhd display 144hz
and so on.

HP Omen (2018) 17"
i7 8750h
gtx 1070
16GB RAM
fhd 144 or 120hz with G sync
and so on.

Price is about same, Helios is a bit pricier than other two but its ok.

Informations online and reviews tells that first 2 laptops dont have g sync, but instead Optimus.
I really like g sync and 1660ti is not capable to push 144 fps on majority of games on high or ultra quality
so without g sync there will be tearing and stutternig.
But on other hand thermal is better on those laptops and battery is much better also.
Well, my questions are:

On laptops with Optimus is it posibble to choose another refresh rate instead of 144, for example 75 and plays happily without tearing (i dont mind speed just smoothness, dont play competitive fps games)?

Which one laptop you suggest me to buy from those 3 above?

Thank you.

P.S. Sorry for my english, because its not my native language.

You can lock fps using a program like nvidia inspector. You should also be able to set your screen refresh rate to something like 72 fps probably. I have a 2018 HP Omen 15 - it gets quite hot and throttles (like a lot of gaming laptops to be fair). I don't know enough about the other laptops to help you choose. It seems most laptops are moving away from g-sync from what I've seen of recent releases. Probably because it sucks battery life.

Thanks for answer. I know about fps lock but without lower hz it will be tearing and stuttering. I used CRU for custom resolutions and refresh rate before, but i dont know if that works on new laptops with optimus.

My Clevo P960EN (16" FHD 144Hz Non-G-Sync) allows 60/72/144Hz V-Sync options in games like Destiny 2, no tearing at all @ 72Hz. In fact even unlocked (around 120-150Hz) I don't find tearing distracting as it's refreshed almost immediately, however I would say for me personally micro-stuttering I seem to be overly sensitive to.

I always have 2 gaming profiles (both V-Sync enabled)
72Hz + Eye-Candy for normal PvE style gameplay
144Hz + low settings for online PvP competitive stuff

I was in two minds on G-Sync, it absolutely kills battery life (which is average at best on gaming laptops), but I cant deny it would be nice, however if I was that botthered, I'm very fortunate to have a good gaming desktop and far prefer that, I only use the Laptop for VR duty and also occasional gaming whenever I either want to play on the couch, or on an evening when working away!

As for which laptop, I considered the Omen/Helios as they are cost effective, what put me off was simply the thermal performance is always commented on as being over throttling to the performance.

Thats why I ended up going for a Clevo based build, same price, but better managed thermals and more build options (aside from screens, 144Hz Non-G-Sync or bust it seems!, but bright enough and definitely more than good enough). a 17" with 16GB RAM / RTX2060 / 9750h is £1250 if you provide your own OS (plenty of legit places on line with economically priced Win 10 licenses).
