I bought some new components recently for an upgrade but not everything is working as it should. :(

I have an Asus Z87 A motherboard with an i5 4670k CPU. Im using my old Ocz 700 w mod xstream PSU. Also just have 1 stick of RAM for testing.

The system boots ok from the onboard GPU but when i add my new GTX760 the red CPU LED lights up on the motherboard and nothing else happens. All fans spin on cpu and gpu but no boot. Im plugging the 8 pin PCI connector into the top of the GPU.

I dont think its the new GPU as i tried an old card and that didnt work either.

I have also tried turning off Secure Boot in the BIOS as i read this could cause issues too, but no good.

Any ideas please?

I had the exact same problem when I first put my current system together (z77-based). It worked fine with on board VGA but just sat doing nothing with a graphics card in. I disabled on board VGA, got the system up and running using the graphics card, then flashed the bios - worked fine after that.

I have flashed to the latest bios but still no good.

I cant seem to disable the onboard card. I can only set a primary gpu. If i set it to pcie instead of gpui it just switches back after a reboot.

I know some boards have a pcie switch, when you plug in a gpu it auto switches and detects gpu,it could be faulty,I've seen a few fail on gigabyte boards Idk if asus are the same,if it is that then you should rma the board for another

I can't think whatelse you can try

Oh you can try a long cmos clear battery out for 30minutes then try

This is actually the 2nd asus Z87A ive had now. I bought the first one from a local shop and had exactly the same issue with that one, although i was convinved it was a CPU issue(due to red CPU LED) and messed around with it so much i ended up breaking off one of the sooket pins and bending a few others. So they wouldnt take it back. Decided to buy a new one(from ocuk) but now know the problem is something else, although have no idea what.

Im tempted to throw the lot on Ebay and buy a premade system. I just cant be doing with the stress and increasing costs.

sounds to me like it could be a psu fault if your psu is breaking down maybe it can not provide enough power to boot up with a big wattage card maybe what psu do you have ?

PSU is a OCZ 700w mod xstream. Its a few years old but should provide enough power.

I wouldn't rule it out though. Sounds atypical of psu failure.

Do what I did last time I had problems; grab a psu from said local store, explain your problem and find out their returns policy ie if you can bring the psu back if it isn't the fault. That way if there isn't a psu fault you don't loose any money. If it is, problem fixed :D

Oh, and try the card in a known good system. Even though it's new, you never know :)

Well I took it into a shop this morning and I was convinced the PSU was the problem, it had to be. The guy hooked the PSU up to some bit of kit and he said it was fine and the power output was as expected. So he started going through all the other things it could be. Tested the graphics card, fine, couldn't test the CPU as they don't keep them laying around, but was unlikely to be that anyway. He was about to give up and send it off to get repaired then I asked if he could just try a different PSU out of curiosity. He hooked up a new one and it all worked first time.

Such a strange problem though. Been driving me crazy all week. Because it was a PSU issue I was getting very inconsistent results when trying to diagnose the problem, which was making it even harder.

Thanks for the replies and help.

Now off to celebrate! :D
