Hey guys,

My sisters laptop is currently dying, even after a reinstall of windows it isn't getting any better, but it was time for a new one according to her anyway.

She's looking for a work laptop with a big screen, preferably big enough to have a numpad on the side.

It's gonna be used for her work and study, which mainly includes word, excel, spss and programs like that.
She won't be using it for anything that is visually taxing. All she cares about is that it's fast, the resolution, weight, battery life and size are not important.

So could any of you help me help her, by finding a laptop with these specs?
The price range would be a maximum of 800 pounds.

Any advice would really be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Greetings,
Rim

If weight and battery life aren't an issue is she a powerlifter who always uses her laptop near a plug socket? Or would a desktop, perhaps, be better for her needs?

Well, she's on a student exchange right now, and lives in a pretty small room where she is now. Her home is pretty small too, so she doesn't have enough room for a desktop.

With that budget you can get something with quality. I'd say a 17'', i5-460M processor (or there about), and good build quality would be the basis.

In that context, you have.

- Dell XPS 17.
- Sony Vaio E 17.
- Samsung RF710.
- HP DV7.
- Lenovo Ideapad Y560 (15'').

Sony offers high res screen (1920 x 1080p), more expensive of course. The Dell is the cheapest option, and the new XPS look really good. The Dell and Sony are customisable. The Dell and Samsung have a sleek metal finish. Not sure about the HP.

You may be able to have a quick look on the models at your local big retailer store.

A big 17'' is nice to work with from a desk, but a pain to carry around.

MSI laptops should be around £800. I would chose for fast laptop. Downside is battery :( but it will be around 2 to 3 hours. Should be more than enough.

Sony laptops gives around 3 hours or more.... Prices are dropping. £800 is more than enough.

There are a lot of choices in £800. I can't tell which is good or bad. Every laptops has its ups and down. Good luck.

I have just picked up a Sony Vaio E 15 for £499 from a well known high street dealer, its cracking and it has the num pad on the side :)

Will play most games too, (not brand new ones)

Personally i would go with the Vaio
