Hi there,

I have been given my sisters tower to repair;

It turns on, but no display.. (All fans spinning and green light is on mobo)

spec:

mobo: ECS P4M900T
CPU; P4 (775) 3.0 ht
ram; 2gb ddr 667
psu; cheapo 400w

What ive tried;

Changed motherboard to a Asus P5KPL-AM (G31) - Didnt do anything (I assumed the onboard vga was dead first so thats why i tried this)

Next I bought a new CPU for it, socket 775 P4 3.06 HT, Which both boards support.. Didnt work.. same problem

Next I bought a new stick of RAM, tried it in both slots, STILL the same..

Next I took out my TX750 and wired it up, Still exactly the same... All boots up, fans the lot but no Display.

What else could it be? Like I said ive tried a new mobo, cpu, ram, psu

Please help this is driving memad :confused:

Different Monitor? Different Cable? IS there sound coming from it?

It could be a resolution issue that the monitor cant support the set recolution?

Thanks for reply;

My monitor has vga and dvi input, I am using the VGA input for it. I assumed the cable might not work so I put a dvi-vga adapter on it and plugged it into my machine and it works fine.

VGA on both boards is intergrated VGA, My monitors native res is 1080p, i think onboard supports that?

There's no sound, its not getting that far, theres no loading from the HDD or anything it just sits there with the fans spinning doing nothing. no matter what parts i change out

Try just using the motherbord with only one stick of RAM, the CPU and Power Supply connected (disconnect Hard Drive/DVD drive) to see if it posts, could be a Hard Drive is causing it to hang befor it tries to boot.

Just tried it and its exactly the same :(

Its confusing me because everythigns been replaced more or less, I suppose theres a small chance the original CPU died and the new 1 I brought off the bay for £15 is not working but how likly is that? :confused:

What was the second CPU you tried? you say 3.06ghz but what model is it?

You could also try booting it with no memory inserted and see if it gives you any beeps to indicate that the board is indeed working.

Pentium 4 64bit 3.0GHz 2Meg Cache 800Mhz Socket 775 CPU Processor SL7Z9 is the new CPU.

The old CPU was a P4 3.0, 1mb cache, 800mhz sckt 775. Though im unsure if it was 32 or 64 bit but I read this G31 board supports them both.

Yeah I tried that last week without any RAM inside, It just does the same thing, So I ordered the new RAM and it still the same (in any slot, or without any ram at all) no beeps or anything

You've got me thinking this is a CPU problem.. hm :confused: I have no more 775 cpus to test in it so im stuck

Have you tried resetting the CMOS on both and stripping them down and running it on a box with just a PSU 1 stick of ram etc (minium setup)

I would have said maybe a motherboard stand in the wrong place or an extra one somewhere causing a short circuit.
But you have changed to a different motherboard so....

I am thinking out loud when i said the above but it can't do any harm to check.

Yeah thats what I was thinking now.

You could try it outside the case just to be sure.

Thanks for the suggestions fellas.

I didnt realise it was safe to take the board(s) out and put them on cardboard and just run it like that.
I'd not thought that it could be shorting something, I'm gonna give that a go now.

(if i have to unwire my psu from 700d again i might cry lol)

cheers
