I'm very excited, hoping to build a PC in the next month or two, the main usage will be for gaming (75%) and the remaining usage possibly for running poker programs which can be quite memory intensive (25%). I haven't built a PC without the help of knowledgeable friends before so this will be my first time attempting everything myself. I know advice would be to wait for the new CPUs and possibly GPUs to come on the market. However, I'm trying to gradually buy components and decide on whether I'll buy the new releases or not.

Does anyone have any comments on the build below and if I could do any better with picking alternatives? Or perhaps upgrading a part in a certain area? I've picked out parts that I'd be very happy with, if for example; I decide not to wait and go with the new Ryzens/or GPU. I'm not opposed to going for an Intel system over an AMD but have been advised I may require a bigger budget and may not really need it.

CPU

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D 3.4 GHz 8-Core Processor

CPU Cooler

Noctua NH-U12A chromax.black 60.09 CFM CPU Cooler

Motherboard

MSI MPG X570 GAMING PRO CARBON WIFI ATX AM4 Motherboard

Memory

G.Skill Trident Z RGB 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL16 Memory

Storage

Samsung 980 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

Video Card

Sapphire Radeon RX 6900 XT 16 GB NITRO+ SE Video Card

PSU

be quiet! Dark Power 12 1000 W 80+ Titanium Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

I don't plan to be overclocking as I've never done it before and my previous PCs have worked well without doing that. My preference has always been for an Air Cooled system with a minimal amount of RGB, I've already gone ahead and bought a Fractal Torrent Compact case and Noctua NH-U12A Black CPU cooler.

Any suggestions are welcomed

Well the good news for you is that the 5800X3D is not overclockable so you do not need to worry about that, overclocking is not what it was and not massive gains to be had with current cpus except in very particular circumstances.

It is a sensible choice of components. You can argue about 12700k being a better choice or whether to go for a 3080 etc etc but there is nothing wrong with the options you are going for.

Some things you can consider. Have you not considered an AIO rather than a big tower cooler? it does look nice and neat when fitted. PSU is good but expensive , can save some money by going with an 80+ gold 1k unit. Can most likely save £50 by going for the X570s Tomahawk like I have rather than the Carbon.

What resolution are you playing at? A 6800 or 6800 XT at £530 - £650 is generally better value than the 6900 XT, but £750 is definitely a much better price for that card than the 1K+ they were at a little while ago. If you're willing to drop to 1440p then the 6700 at £300 is maybe the best pick of all and you could hold onto it until the next gen midrange cards that are likely around Q2/Q3 2023.

AMD are supposed to be releasing their new CPUs very soon, Raptor Lake will come later, but it looks like only the high-end graphics cards from AMD and nvidia will release this year.

2560 x 1440 is the default resolution that I'm using. Got an LG 850 GL monitor and tend to play strategy games like Age of Empires or animated shooters like Overwatch. I would like to start getting doing some more gaming with games that could be more GPU intensive so I'm willing to stretch the budget on a GPU which can perform on future titles. Maybe the 6900 XT could be the one, how would you say it compares to the best Nvidia cards out right now?

From what I understand if I chose to go with the 12700k it may perform tasks outside of gaming slightly better but at quite a gap in price from the AMD chips. The Nvidia cards look good too...if money wasn't an issue maybe I would go for an Nvidia over AMD for the GPU; might be possible if prices continue dropping.

When I first thought of the build I did think of going for an AIO, but performance wise a big tower cooler seemed like it works better and has a longer life span. But please correct me if I'm wrong on that. I've noted the other suggestions on the parts, thanks.

At your resolution it is just about the fastest card there is if the game does not have Raytracing enabled. In some titles a 3090/ti may be faster but the 6900xt has superb rasterisation performance.

5800X3D or 12700k is a choice you have to make. I personally would go for a 12700K system but that does not mean the 5800X3D system is a bad choice , it is significantly faster in certain games. The other choice is to wait and see what AM5 is like , just a few weeks until it is released and you could be kicking yourself if it is really good.

Yes tower coolers do have longer potential lifespans , change the fan and they can last decades whereas the pump in an AIO will fail after so many years. In general a 360 AIO will outperform a tower cooler but there are some very fancy humungous tower coolers that are better than even a custom loop
