Hi guys, so basically I am distraught after the events which have occurred this evening.

I just upgraded my PSU as it was about 3-4 years old and I think it was dying as my PC kept shutting down whilst gaming and re booting itself. I was also having USB problems where sometimes they were not receiving enough power so my USB ports would just cut out and my keyboard, mouse, headset would just stop working.

After I added my new PSU to my PC, I powered it on and suddenly a very small fire broke out inside my case. Obviously I quickly powered off my PC and took a closer look inside, (see photo) and I really don’t know what can be concluded. My PC still powers on, boots fine however none of my USB ports seems to be powering my keyboard? I have tried 2 different keyboards and none of them work. My mouse and WiFi card that are plugged in via USB are still working fine.

not sure if it’s a coincidence either but my power LED is also flickering now when I plug in my USB devices? (See video)

I just don’t really know what has happened and now I don’t think I can use my PC. If anyone could help that would be greatly appreciated!

wasnt sure how to upload photo on the forum so I posted them in imgur: https://imgur.com/a/NmzX3tX

Hi Jack - welcome to the forums.

In your position I would unplug my PC from the wall for now. You don't want to create a fire hazard in your house!

So it looks like either your new PSU or your motherboard had a defect, and something has blown.

Where did you buy the motherboard and PSU from? What makes are they?

If it were me I'd suspect the motherboard, as the symptoms you describe from when your old PSU sound to me more like a motherboard issue than a PSU issue. If it's within warranty I'd try to RMA the motherboard; first with the retailer than with the manufacturer if the retailer isn't an option (e.g. you bought second hand or retailer has gone out of business).

thanks for the reply!
I’ve unplugged it all so I’m pretty safe (I hope). I have an 970 MSI motherboard from amazon a few years ago and just bought an aerocool 750W PSU from ******. Not sure how long warranty the motherboard came with and I’m not sure if I have the details to claim. But will definitely look in to it.

So you say your WiFi ISB dongle and USB mouse still work? And they work in all ports? And your keyboard doesn’t work in any port, including ports that the WiFi dongle and mouse work in? Then you have a faulty keyboard. However, I would go rushing into simply buying a new one without investigating what happened. I’d likely remove the motherboard from the case and have a proper look at it.

yes I have tried keyboard in every single USB slot I have, and as soon as I attempt to plug a keyboard in my PC LED starts flickering. I have tried 2 keyboards in the PC and the keyboards were working fine before this incident.
