Hi there,
long time lurker but first post, hoping someone can help.
I'm a bit of a noob so please bear with me! just built a new budget rig after reading some excellent advice in posts on the forum.

Heres the main bits...
Phenom IIx2 550BE
MSI 770 C45
2GB Crucial DDR3 1333mhz
HD4850 1GB
520w Coolermater modular psu
Antec 300

I first noticed a problem when trying to install xp as the system was freezing at various points during setup. Could only get through it by boosting dram voltage up to 1.76v from stock 1.5v this was running at 1333mhz, again the standard speed for the stick.
Was able to install os but still got complete system freezes in some games and within 15mins of prime 95 blend test. Strange thing was that i could run memtest overnight without issue. I've since tried a complete format, different psu and graphics card but i've found the only way to get stability is by dropping memory frequency down to 1066mhz. Even at the lower speed i still need to boost voltage to avoid freezing.

Do you think these could be symptoms of just a bad stick of ram or something mobo related? The msi is supposed to support ddr3 1333mhz fine but maybe i've missed some incompatibility somewhere?
Any advice much appreciated.

You might want to check the mobos website to see if there is a new BIOS out for it or if there are known RAM timing issues.

Other than that it does sound like faulty RAM.

Thanks, i just checked and i am on the most recent bios for the board. Cant find anything specific about timings on the msi but i've tried auto spd setting and manually setting up crucials supposed timings but the effect is always the same.
Is it normal for some memory to need much higher voltage than stated and is it safe to do so? or shall i just try and return the stuff i've got?
