Hi all,

Small problem today, we use Windows 7 at work, all staff with laptops have offline file syncing enabled to work at home (Using the pap that is Windows 7 built in sync) one user had a few problems unbeknown to her that her files were not syncing back to the server, so were on her laptop only, which, for 6 months has been fine (We had no clue or indication to point to this), however she logged on form one of the desktops today, and couldn't see most of her files, so one of our team asked her to log off, log back onto her laptop and give him control, which she did, he then said the sync was corrupted, ran some "fix for currupted offline file cache" and ran a sync, which promptly synced from the server to the laptop, losing 6 months of her work, not merging as it normally should do.

Right now we are in a real situation, I want to find a way to get these files back that were on the laptop, but I'm not sure if they have been hidden, removed, unindexed or what? Any helpto recover these files would be SO appreciated, as I'm just facepalming at someone doing this! (It wasn't me!!)

If they are stored still they are normlly in C:\Windows\CSC\v2.0.6

You will need to log in as domain admin though or assign another user permissions to this folder.

Although that cache thing might have cleared it :(

I have had problems with that in the past :( Caused me all sorts of issues.

Thanks mate, currently trawling through that folder after an eternity gaining ownership of the folder!

Really hoping it's not been cleared, going to bring Recuva in tomorrow and run that through too, see if I can find anything at all that may help.

Tried recuva, but sadly it seems to have found the older files for this morning, but lists them as irrecoverable due to being overwritten by x file...

I'm sad :(

I normally use a linux live CD to gain access to the folder, taking ownership in Windows takes forever!

That was the next plan, but managed to get access sorted now.

Recuva is telling me those files are no longer recoverable due to the clusters being in use with another file now, is there any way to get deeper in and recover anything? Or do you think I need to cut my losses and accept that I can't fix this problem :(

That's pretty funny. Unfortunate set of occurrences. Your work needs to learn to take more care with data- at least it's only 6 months work gone this time.

Take the hard drive out of the laptop and put it in a USB2 caddy

Try Recuva first, if this fails, then use getdataback or filescavenger, both are excellent. Well worth the money!

You can normally get trials of these things which will scan and show you what is recoverable.

You then need to pay before it will recover but at least you know the product will get it back then.

I did this with getdataback a few years back.
