I want to set up something on my LAN which allows me to play media files on my TV

do I need a NAS box and/or something else

sorry if I sound clueless but I am :)

thanks folks

so if I were to get something like this

WDTV 1TB Live Hub Media centre

that would be everything I need, I just connect wirelessly to my network and vis HDMI to my TV and evrything is good ?

is wireless ok or would I be better using a cabled connection ?

just a though, it would be hard wored to my TV so the wireless is just data aceess over the network, it wouldnt strem over netwrok so wouldn't matter , is that correct ?

cheers

the WDTV 1TB doesn't have wirelless anyway unless you use usb adaptor

so I am heading towards the WCTV 1TB as that seems an easy solution, as I right that this is all I need and a way to connect to netowrk ?

my TV is nowhere near the router but I do have a poweline thing which is behind the TV and used to connect a slingbox to the router

could I just put a cheap 4 port ethernet hub attached to the powerline and connect the slingbox and media server to that ?

Boxee box, I love mines :D

looks great for stuff like 4od and iplayer but from what I can see I would need NAS boc as well and so would end up costing about 300, the WDTV has the NAS type storage built in

looked at the xstreamer but can't really tell if it's what i need or not

Hurrah, at last.

3rd WMP74 arrived and fully working.
Still not as good as my Sony BDP-S370 though.

just installed a WMP74, put a USB disk I had kicking round on it and a 8 quid wireless adaptor, does everything I need it to do and at under 70 quid for everything you can't got wrong

one thing I have noticed with the VMP74 and a USB drive, it is desperately slow when copying stuff too it over the wireless network, anyone else find it slow ?

seems to stream iplayer etc fine though

have you tried to place a laptop or another wireless device in the same place as the WMP74to see if its the signal problem or could there be a update to the unit for fixes etc?

Kenneth

I sit with laptop very close to it all the time with no problems, firmware is at latest, I have a powerline unit nearby, might just put a cheap switch on that and use it wired
