Hi, I am doing this on behalf of someone I know who works with music software such as Propellerheads Reason 6.5.

I've asked him a series of questions, his replied answers are in bold text.

All I need is some good helpful folks to help spec him a build. I've not been very much upto date with all the latest tech (mobo's processor socklets for example), since I built my I720 system back in Jan 2010.

Anyways, here's the information I've asked. If you're experienced pc builder and into music production beides playing games then al lthe better.

___Here's the info I have____

£500-£1000 is not specific enough, there is a big difference bwtween a £500 PC and a £1000 worth of one.

You need to state what need as in requiered hardware and peripherals (eg keyboards mice) / is Windows software needed ?

If it's full build, you need to ask yourself a set of questions on what route you want to go.

1. Intel or AMD

Pretty sure I want i7 processor

2. Do you want water cooling of some sort or just a third party standard heatsink and fan. ( If you are over clocking the cpu don't use the retail HSF that come's with the the retail CPU). Water cooling doesn't mean it's going to very expensive, there are smaller units like the Corsair H50 and H70 that are available. Heatsink and fan very low maintenace needed if a quality case is used with dust filters.
Some Heatsink and fans like the Zalman CNPS10X Extreme are very big, which can mean that if you have a side window , you may not be able to attach any fans on it's side if it provides space for them. Some HSF also provide a remote control like the one I mentioned and have allow you to control the fan speed manualy and clicking through presets.

not bothered - just want it to work as well as possible with minimal effort from me!

3.Motherboard, is there anything specific you want from your motherboard as in ports / number of ports and possible type of ports. Do you want to use multiple graphic cards in SLI for example. Motherboard dictatates the size of case you choose but standard ATX should be sufficient for you,

a few USB, firewire - nothing unusual

4. Graphic Cards, do you want a gaming with a fan to play games or do you want passive cooling using a solid block of metal for more quiet use with less power than normal gaming cards ? Most cards nowadays come with at leasst 2 DVI Ports and an HDMI socket, some older ones don't. You will want a graphics card which has at least 1 GIG of ram available to it.

I *would* like to be able to game on it so a decent GFX card would be nice

5. How much total memory do you want to be able to install, 16, 24, or 32 gigabytes and what speed ? The speed of the ram also factors in when you start overclocking and the capacity will also determine what motherboard options you have.

16gb should be enough

6. Do you require a harddrive, do you want an SSD drive for the operating system and programs ?

not too bothered - probably 2 x 7200 HD (1tb each maybe?)

7. Do you need a DVDRW Burner drive ?

yes

8. Do you need PSU, a Power Supply Unit to power it all ?

yes

9. The case itself, do you want a side window or just all inclosed, do you want sound proofing insulation provided with the case, do you want to put in a pro level watercooloing system in it for the future ?

sound proof, nothing fancy

10. Last but not least (hardware wise), do you require an additional monitors and if so what size are you looking for and resolution, is it beyond 1080P. You will want a screen which is better than a standard LED TV screen type.

2 monitors max - i don't think i want beyond 1080p !

11. Do you require an operating system ?

yes - windows 7 or 8 will do i guess

When you have answered all these questions, you will be in a better position to understand what you want from a PC and easier for users to choose parts to your budget and ensure compatibility.

Ok so £1000 for a full system with 2 monitors and OS?

This should be interesting...

One more thing... ;)

Does the software he uses support Hyperthreading or use more than 4 threads / cores.

Reason 6.5 uses all core's but I believe it doesn't use hyperthreding at this present time.

This thread was posted really early this morning so might not have th best time to post, any more suggestions. (thanks for those so far)

Thanks for the time putting the kit list together, there are some things I would change based upon my own experience as I do play games myself as well as produce music. Music production is his primary goal and so I think the graphics card is rather overkill he could grab a good one for half that price. I've got a Palit GTS250 1 gig card I picked up for £90 in Jan 2010 and is still able to Battlefield 3 amazingly well on high. He mentioned he wanted 16 gigs of ram and not 8 as shown from the replies. The 550 Watt PSU may be ok but, personally I'd opt for a 750 watt version with semi-modular cable unit. The case whilst not the most attractive looking could be insulated. He's mentioned 2 monitors also, though I'm unsure myself it that would be feasible to fit into the budget.

There is also no cooling solution in the parts list, I myself wouldn't recommend using the stock one provided with the CPU.

Cheers.

Thanks for the update, I think that's probably closer to the mark he's going to be looking at for all that kit. If he's going to overclock he'll be adding another £30 + to that amount. The capacity of the mobo I see is limited to 16 gigs I see also so expanding beyond that in the future can't be done. My X58 Gigabyte-UD5 supports 24 gigs of ram as well as SLI, but my mobo did cost around £180 alone. Graphic card wise I wouldn't go near ATI myself for a few reasons of my own, I mentioned it in past threads on here.

I know it's hard to get a lot for your money when buy parts as new, it's probably worth his while buying a base unit second hand I5 or even better an I7 unit of an older generation that is in good condition and saving the retail purchases for the monitors he needs an or other addon's like rack extensions (basically plugin's) for Propellerheads Reason

Thanks Bacon.

Anyways, I've been requested to bump this to see any other possible configurations he could look at. I get the feeling he's willing to drop some money on it.

Just over budget, but if you really wanted it in budget then I suppose you could remove the SSD which i know was not requested... but they are great!

Never used Reason before, so wasn't really sure how large the install is and havn't the time to research it. I've used Ableton before if that's anything to compare by, and I managed to get that and all of my add-ins + OS + other bits & bobs on a 240GB SSD... Rapid!! :) That way you might be able to drop one of the larger HDD's

Gone with a GTX650Ti - Although not as good as the card Bacon posted, you said you didn't like ATI. This will run BF3 etc on high and be very nice. Mind you - can do that on a GTX 460 if you wanted to really cut down.. but then your not really future proofing yourself...

I chose the case as I believe they sell a noise dampening kit for it, and i Like BitFenix gear :) .. case is always personal preference anyway!
