I was out late last night and awoke this morning to find my PC will not boot and that there’s water dripping from the top exhaust fan. I have absolutely no memory of spilling anything so I don’t know if the PC was on or off when the water hit it.

If I toggle the power supply on and off the little light on the motherboard does also turn on and off so I’m hoping that the PSU and motherboard are still alive.

I can test my graphics card and ram in my Dad’s computer but it’s a 2500k based system so I can’t test the motherboard or cpu. I haven’t disassembled anything yet and I’m concerned about testing in my Dad’s computer because I don’t want to risk blowing that up too.

Really not sure where to begin and could really use some advice.

Not a very merry Christmas for me :(

You're gonna need a lot of rice.

I would completely disassemble the pc, make sure everything is dry, clean with isopropyl alcohol where possible and leave in an airing cupboard overnight, then build back up with minimum components, and add further components if it works.

Thanks for the replies. There’s a bit too much going on right now with Xmas and all so disassembly will have to wait until that’s out of the way.

I had a puppy take a pee in the front intake fan of my old PC.

I don't have a puppy anymore
Haha! :p

Take off the side panel and let it dry at room temp. It should be bone dry in a day or two without disassembly. Good luck!

Getting wet is fine, what it not fine is turning it on when it's wet. If it's just water then normally all you need to do is completely dry it. Leave it as long as you can without turning it on. If you spill a drink on a PC then unfortunately that will leave a deposit, which must be cleaned off. The best thing to do is to rinse it thoroughly with de-ionised water and give it plenty of time to dry. You can use solvents, it's a lot better, but it's also expensive. Honestly I wouldn't know what a non-conductive solvent is these days, there used to be something called Genclene. I would certainly remove everything and power just the motherboard up first. Then if everything makes the right noises trying placing graphics cards and so on back in.

my pal has a phone shop get a lot in for water damage and he said put each wet component in a zippy bag with white dry rice for a few days then try it and see if they work , the rice draws all the moisture out and dries it

Thanks, will give it a try.

Some of the water pooled the very end of the graphics card cooler/shroud thing so I’m thinking I should probably remove it in order to dry and clean it properly.

Finally got around to taking my system apart today and it's good news and bad news.

Bad news is my graphics card is dead, the good news is everything else seems OK so far. Just a shame that it's my graphics card that bit the dust since its the single most expensive component in my system.

I suppose I should be grateful that I didn't kill everything but, well, poo :(
