hi

this is starting to drive me a little insane; whenever I plug in a usb pen drive I hear the connection beeps from Vista but it shows nothing in 'My computer'.

Had a new usb pen drive arrive this morning and plugged it in to hear the common beeps and then even asked me to name the device but it is still not showing.

Please help me..aaarrgghhh.

It's 64bit Ultimate btw.

Many thanks.

do you have 4gb of ram?

if so run windows update, there's a patch on there that fixes usb & 4gb ram issues..

check in disk management to see if it's there

click start
type in..

diskmgmt.msc

press enter

Thanks for reply bledd; I do have 4gb ram.

Have run Windows update but it's not showing any new updates. Have also checked the disk management like you showed and it is showing the pen drive in there but still not showing in 'my computer'.

Edit: After coming out of disk management it is now showing in 'my computer'.

Many thanks again bledd.

do you have any mapped network drives?

does it let you assign a drive letter to it in disk management?

-a common problem is when you've got a network drive mapped as say E:, and the usb stick tries to use E:, it can't because it's already in use

see if you lets you assign or change the letter it's trying to use in diskmanagemnt, and maybe format it too (this removes all data if you have any on it..)

You are on a roll today bledd; you've got everything correct. Yes I do have a network and as you say Vista wants to give the usb drive the same letter as drive on network.

Have changed drive letter and all is fine. You are a superstar bledd.

Many thanks again for help.
