Ok
I have a D-Link router with 4 inputs for LAN. Now I already have the main pc using the router for cable internet from Lan 1 on the back.
All I want to do is run a cable from Lan 2 to another pc in another room!
Now I have connected the cable but the second pc is not letting me on the net!
Do I have to install anything on the second pc to recognise the router?
Or do I have to somehow allow it access?
I only want it for the net, not worried about networking!
I thought I could just plug the lead in and away we go?
Any help would be great,
Cheers

No.

You could. Evidently something else is wrong.

In what way is the machine "not letting [you] on the net"? Does the machine even get an IP? Is it showing as connected? Can it get to the router's web interface? Can it ping the router?

  • What kind of cable are you using from the router to PC #2, straight through (patch) or crossover?
  • Is the ethernet adapter on PC #2 enabled with the correct drivers installed? Check in device manager
  • Do you have TCP/IP configured on PC #2 to obtain it's IP etc from the router?

Well I connected the lead and when I click internet explorer I get a page cannot be displayed error! I'm still on the net on pc1 though!
I don't know what cable it is as it was given to me by some tech people who made it themselves!
On the front of the router the light is permanently on on no1 where the main pc is but no2 is slowly flashing. I'm guessing this needs to be on!
I'm sorry I don't understand much but having had a look at the 2nd pc TCP/IT is ticked!

I know the ethernet on pc2 is fine as this used to be pc1 and worked fine with and without the router!
Web interface and pings I'm sorry I have no clue what they are!
Thanks for the help

Having swapped the cable to see if it works with the existing pc1 I have found it doesn't work so I'm thinking it's the cable!

If the cable has an X marked on it, it's probably a crossover cable. You need a regular RJ45 terminated cable.

I've sorted it now.
What it was, the caps hadn't been fully pushed onto the cable so i cut it and re wired it and now it's fine!
Cheers for the help!
