Hi ,I have purchased a new house (not new build) and I have some concerns about the internet options I currently have VM and get 200/19 but I can’t get this in our new house it looks like my only option is sky or bt. I would prefer BT and fibre 2 looks like it would suit my needs but when I check on the bt site with the post code checker it’s suggesting that I can only get fibre 1 with 13 to 23 down and 2 to 4 up. Could this be due to the cabling in the street or is fibre 2 possible . Appreciate any help given

Exchange is probably a few miles away id suspect. You will only be able to get the recommended line speeds so in your case fibre 2 would be a waste of money.

Thanks for the replies,I’ve managed to get through to someone at BT that knew what they were talking about. So open reach shows 80 download but because I’m a certain distance from the exchange I can only get what the website is stating so basically I’m stuck with ***** broadband. Time to sell the gaming PC I think

Ideally its better running those checks using the actual phone number instead of the post code search.

Do you know the house current phone number? Type that in and see what it says.

Welcome to rubbish "lazy BT" broadband. 75% of the country hasn't had an upgrade in over ten years, and a depressingly large number are still on adsl.

23 down is perfectly adequate to game on, it’s slow to grab large patches/digital downloads, but a lot of people manage on far less.

Back out and buy another house.

this has crossed my mind but the wife has fallen in love with the house so I’m considering divorce ....

When we got our current home I had wired internet fitted to every room that needed it and have never had issues with VM the thought of internet issues is currently taking the shine off our new house for me anyway.

Look at it this way, FTTP is supposed to be coming in the next few years, if the house is really great other than the connectivity, then that's likely to change sooner rather than later, 4G and 5G are a thing and decent data plans are reasonably affordable and may be faster than your wired connection. Either way t's manageable, you just leave updates going overnight and pre-load new releases etc. where possible.

Supposedly. The issue is that Openreach are as secretive as an intelligence agency. There’s no way I could live with sub 40 Mbps broadband and I would be pulling out of the purchase.

It's going to be tough going from 200 to 26, but I get around 30/6 myself and while game downloading and stuff is slow, every day usage it doesn't really make a difference, we stream 4k HDR content without an issue. You will just have to hope your exchange is due for the FTTH upgrade soon!
