Please help with new build....

Hi all

Just put together a new system as follows:

Asus P5Q Series Motherboard
Q6600
4GB Corsair RAM
ATI 4850
Seagate Barracuda 500GB HDD
.....and kept my old HDD which has Win XP on it.

Ok, now for the problem.

We installed Windows Vista Business onto the new HDD and have old (XP based) HDD as a slave.

I am noticing that the system, although newer, seems slower than before. Is this because of the "clash" with two HDDs on different OS?

Will i be able to put Windows Vista over the old HDD and not lose any saved files?

I also notice that Vista only recognises 3.25GB of the RAM, yet in the BIOS its says the full 4GB????

Is Vista Crap?

Also, this new Seagate Barracuda seems really loud when "thinking". Is this the norm?

Any help, however little will be great.

Hmm, not sure what to suggest there. I very much doubt it's anything to do with dual operating systems on different drives.

You can put Vista on the other hard drive but you'd need to format it, therefore all files lost.

Depends really on how loud the rest of your system is. The 7200.11's are not really loud - there are quieter drives but the 7200.11's are quite good. So long as they aren't clicking, scratching or making other dodgy noises then assume it's the norm. Maybe the rest of your system is just quiet and you're hearing the hard drives over the rest of the machine which is quite common in quiet systems.

That would be time to think about sending it back

Clicking and scratching is 90% of the time the beginning of the end for a hard drive.

Thanks mate. Its isnt normal so i will take it back. It is happening when going between web pages

I am trying to drag files over and run programs from the XP HDD but its seems to conflict with Vista, is that normal? Common sense tells me that i need both HDD on the same OS or i will have problems.

It's probably due to privacy. Running things from other hard drives might make stuff like UAC flare up and telling you don't have permission. Dragging files should be easy enough, shouldn't have any problems with that.

From your comment about 3.25gb I'm assuming you havent been back in your XP OS and checked things out (and seen the same amount of memory). Each program you want to use is going to have to be installed separately on each OS.

Without knowing how loud the HD access noise is its impossible to comment. Some people freek out after hearing pin drop volume HD's if their old one they were used to was effectively silent. (I gave up a long time ago trying to ask customers if they could hear/distinguish HD load noises).

As said above. Particularly loud HD's have a habit of dying 13 months after purchase (always write to your retailer if this happens). Unless it sounds genuinely bad across a phone conversation, good luck trying to rma an annoying non silent HD. It sucks when you get one thats not as quiet as you'd like.
