Hi All

Yet another component list for you experts to comment and advise on please.

I am not a gamer but want to build a reliable, fast, responsive system which must run cool and be very quiet.

The CPU is proberly OTT but I could not find another OEM
version.

As the PSU will be installed at the bottom of the case, will the connection cable be long enough?

I don't know much about the cooler so I'd be thinking about changing it, if the case has enough space a Tuniq Tower or Noctua NH-U12F would be a good option.

I'd change the Ram for the Geil PC6400 C4, about £20 cheaper at the moment and will perform as well.

Any particular reason for XP Home? If building a new system then Vista may be a better choice at the moment.

I'd change the DVDRW to a SATA model if it isn't already and finally if the PSU cables are too short then you can get extension cables. :)

Hi semi-pro waster.

Thanks for that.

I'm using WinME (I know, but I like it) and most, if not all of my Apps and utilities will/should run on WinXP but I would expect more problems with Vista.

I will also try Ubuntu 7.10 which looks promising.

Which SATA DVDRW do you recommend please?

Hi BENdage

See above re Vista.

Thanks for the memory recommendation.

For the small extra cost a floppy drive can get you out of trouble sometimes so I prefer to install one.

Any of the SATA writers would be fine, I'd probably go with the Samsung SH-S203BEBN 20x20 DVD±RW Dual Layer Serial ATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM but I doubt it will matter much.

WinME? Devilspawn is OS form. :p XP is still a good OS, I just thought I'd check in case you hadn't considered Vista but your reasoning is sound enough. :)

Hi BENdage

IMHO, Vista is too new to consider using atm.

I'm only just considering upgrading from WinME to WinXP!!

And only so I can get a multicore processor. Otherwise I would continue to use WinME.
