So I have a problem that's been going on for months...

“The DNS server isn't responding”

I'm getting this message upto 4/5/6 times a day and its doing my head in. Sometimes turning off my D-Link (DSL-504T) router/modem helps but the problem comes back. I've looked in my “local Area Connection Status” and im still sending/ receiving bytes. I've been on google and followed some steps on answers.microsoft.com but the problem still persists.

I dont know if its my pc, my service provider or my D-Link modem. (I also have a laptop and that wont connect either, so im guessing its not my pc)

I'm using an Asus Crosshair V with Intel(R) 82583V Gigabit Network Connection. Running all 3 diagnostics tests gets a pass.
Using Firefox gets the same results
Sometimes utorrent still works when I get the problem...?!!?
I've tried disabling my avast internet security, as well as Microsoft firewall.
Also tried my other D-Link 502T router/modem

I'm now at my witts end..... any pros out there wanna help me please?! Oh, look at that my internet is now working again... but for how long?

Cheers ... sorry about the big pics

Who's DNS servers are you using?

Have you tried using Google (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) or OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220)?

Who's? mine!? whos would i be using?!

Its says this: DNS servers........ 10.1.1.1

edit. sorry, not really good at this stuff. build a pc/install software i can do,
everthing else = ?

edit. im trying there now... OpenDNS (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220)

well thats your issue then, not DNS...

1) verify you cannot get bt infinity / faster BB (i think they call borked inifinity something like that)
2) try a dlink 2640 router (£9 on the bay) or if anyone else can suggest router with as good an ADSL chip
3) master socket everything disconnected to make sure there is no issue in the house
4) change the MTU to the smallest it will accept (1300 or 1400 i think)
5) move the ADSL connection method down a notch, if its connected with ADSL2+ change to ADSL2, if its ADSL2 try g.GMT you need to power cycle and physically remove the phone cable for a sec (well not convinced you need to do the last bit (remove cable) but ISP's insist its required and it only takes 5 seconds)
6) try a different network card (unless you have verified it does the same on different computers on the network)

try some combination of the above

ok thanks

1. i live in aussie. so no can do (36dec today)
2. i have a netgear WPN824 4 port/wireless router so will try that
3. will do that for sure!
4. MTU? u mean MRT? ill try that
5. How do i do this?!
6. No network card but ive update my Intel 82583V Network adapoters on my motherboard... does the same when i use my laptop

thanks again

So my internet went down again but for only 15mins this time

My DNS setting are set to above open DNS
I unplugged the landline
MTU set at 1300
I think the above steps have helped.... so thank you guys!

What else can i do.... & why the hell does this keep happening (last 6 months) it never use to?
