Hi,

I'm looking to pull the trigger on a Titan 8700i Pulse system with a 7950 graphics card. I'll mainly be using it for FPS gaming and watching a few movies.

My current understanding is 120hz is really a mandatory requirement as the system will likely go above 60 frames per second. I'm also under the impression an IPS panel is not so good with it's slower response times.

That's about the extent of my understanding of monitors so I was hoping for some advice :) Of course I could be completely wrong so feel free to correct me!

A 24" is probably the best option as I'm only really looking to spend £150 - £200.

Depends entirely what kind of games you play and how seriously you take your gaming.

If you spend a lot of time playing MMOs, games like league of legends, etc. then you'd be better off with the image quality of an IPS panel and the response times won't be a major issue. (That said I swapped over to play eve online on a 120Hz panel as the UI is just so much smoother and more precise compared to any 60Hz panel).

If you spend most of your time playing games like quake, call of duty, counter-strike, etc. online then theres no substitute to a 120Hz panel and slower response times are a massive disadvantage.

For fast paced online games then not much matches the BenQ XL2420T and Samsung 2233rz but the samsung sadly is an outdated lower res panel now :( and its replacements don't match upto the benchmark it set which pretty much leaves the BenQ as probably the best online FPS gaming monitor (there are other that are close but none that match how responsive it is plus the extra gaming features).

Personally tho I dislike the BenQ for extended non-gaming use - the backlight hue isn't the most kind on the eye and the color reproduction isn't the most natural either. I'd probably say the newer samsung 120Hz panels are a better compromise between gaming performance and image quality.

EDIT: Prices have changed a bit since I last looked at them (and I mis-read your budget first time around) the XL2420T is kind of outside of your budget at current prices :S (I got mine for almost £100 cheaper than they are now). The Benq XL2411T is about the only thing in that range in the region of what you want to spend.

You're right to stay away from IPS screens for fast paced games (such as FPS games)... I've tried many IPS and they all have some noticeable form of motion blur/streaking/ghosting. I'd personally go with the Benq XL2411T if you want a good 120hz screen without spending too much ;).

I should correct my original post and say I suspect they'll be 33% FPS gaming, 33 browsing and 33% movies... I've also read that IPS panel in particular is perfectly fine for gaming - no ghosting noticed etc.

Some people might not notice the blurring/ghosting, but i've tested quite a few IPS monitors so far (I'm using an LG IPS screen right now) and i've noticed it to some extent with all of them. The colour accuracy and viewing angles are great though :). It's also worth noting that IPS screens are not that great with dark movies due to the glow that is typical with IPS screens, some are worse than others... Then there's the use of agressive AG coating that gives the image a grainy look!

There's a world of difference between a 120hz TN panel and an IPS panel when it comes to gaming (response times and smoothness).
 
Hmmm! I've read so many people saying both sides of the argument - I really need to see both in action. How much would a return on a screen like this cost?
