Hi folks,
I've been given a sony laptop to fix, it basically needs a reformat/ reinstall. It has the sony recovery cds with it but the problem is that you cannot boot from cd - the bios doesn't seem to recognise the cd drive, but it works in windows fine. the software on the cd says to boot from cd to recover, yet this seems impossible.

I have tried my windows cd as well but again - the same problem it will not boot from cd.

please help me. any ideas/suggestions?

in the bios i have the h.d.d. set to lowest boot order and the "optical drive" to 1st boot device. The laptop has no floppy driver so i cant boot from a dos disk.

arrghhh!!!

I have, unfortunately it doesnt work.

The problem seems to be I cannot boot from the cd because the bios won't recognise the drive which makes it impossible to restore (using the cd's which came with it) or even re-install windows :(
the laptop is a sony viao pcg 8l1m.

does any1 have any ideas?

Tried this? Found it on the vaio support website:

Insert the recovery CD/DVD (if you have one) in the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drive.

Start or restart your VAIO.

When you see the Sony logo, press F2 repeatedly to enter the BIOS.

Once in the BIOS, insert the first recovery CD in the CD-ROM drive.

Press F9 to restore the default values (F5 on VAIO desktops).

When asked to confirm, press ENTER.

Press F10 to save the configuration and exit the BIOS.

When asked to confirm, press ENTER again.

The VAIO restarts and boots on the recovery CD (if applicable).
