Hi all,

I'm currently trying to get MSN Messenger working correctly for my brother on his laptop and my PC, and it's starting to do my nut in. I believe I have successfully created the Virtual Server Rules and the Packet Rules to pass through the Firewall, and I have added the ports to the WindowsXP Firewall as well, but things like WebCam still do not work! If I disable the Firewall altogether it connects, but once enabled it is being blocked.

Here are the Virtual Server entries (as followed on Port Forward):-

And here are the Rules for the Firewall:-

The only thing I can think of as to why it does not work for my brother (but works for me) is the IP Address on the Virtual Server entries?! That IP is mine, he is x.x.x.101 however the Router won't let me assign the same ports but just change the IP as it says it is "Reserved" (obviously as it's already pointing to mine). How then can I create a Virtual Server for Messenger for me AND for the laptop? Or do I not need to??? I tried an IP of 0.0.0.0 but the Router would not accept that.

 :(

Please help! TIA!

Looks like you're using a Billion router. To open ports I created rules inside the firewall configuration rather than using port forwarding. I'm not at my place so I can't look at my router to give you the exact instructions.

Hi, yea Billion BiPAC 7402VGP. :)

So you never did the Virtual Server part, you just added them to the Firewall section. Hmmm, ok thanks. I have just found out that UDP Port 7001 + 3478 are needed as well with this Messenger Live. But 3478 is for a VoIP service, I'll see if this has helped though.

What level did you set the default firewall to? I set my to high and then setup the necssary firewalls rules for my various applications. That has been working for me without any issues.

I did Medium, and then blocked Telnet as I don't use that and left everything else. :) Then like you did, added various rules for other applications. It has to be the firewall as if it's disabled the webcam works on the laptop. But once enabled it stops. However I tried it direct on the network and that works, so it seems to be a port imo being blocked, but I'm just not sure about the Virtual Server part.

The way I configured my msn was make sure nothing else was trying to get access to the internet and they try to use MSN. Every port that the firewall blocks will be logged. Just enable those ports and should be working fine. As I said before I put my fules under firewall.

Hey, thanks that's a good idea actually. :D I shall try that when I can and see what happens.
