Please help with wii problem....

My youngest lad's wii has stopped working after years of heavy use. He is getting disk read error messages on every disk he tries to use. We have bought and used the official wii lens cleaner but although it helped a little the disks still won't load properly. I expect the laser has gone.

What is the best way to get a RELIABLE repair? Is it a do-it-yourself replacement?

Is it only happening after the new firmware update came out?
There have been reports of wii's breaking and showing disk errors after the update.

Phone the nintendo help line they should be able to tell you how much it would cost them to repair it and then you can compare that to the cost of buying a new drive and doing it yourself.

Yes - a definite maybe

There have been updates and he has applied them.

However the failure to read disks might have been a gradual process .

Sorry - but he is a bit vague about the symptoms.

If it was me, knowing that the Wii doesn't have a harddrive and uses only flash memory, I would sell the faulty Wii on ebay for probably £40-50 (you would be surprised what people will pay for faulty consoles) and buy a brand new Wii for £135-£150 (both prices I have seen in supermarkets in september)
