Please help xp

Tried booting up the pc today to find it taking about 15 minutes to get to the desktop. I checked task manager and there's between 50-80% cpu usage plus constant hd activity although there are no processes using any major cpu time (idle processes at 99% as is usual). The system seems fine in safe mode so I don't suspect hardware faults.
Done a full virus scan a few days ago before this happened and Avast did find a few nasties but the system was fine until this morning. Is it possible ive got another virus? The computer is barely usable atm and i'd really appreciate your advice Folks.

Format and remove that prehistoric operating system and install Windows 7 RC

you sure your fans aren't clogged up? it happens with me sometimes.

and i dont use Avast, i use kaspersky internet security, its very nice, runs in the background of windows.

Disk Defragment
Disk Cleanup
Optimize for Performance (take off eye-candy etc.)
